Having embraced new technology my dad, who is in his 80s, seems to have lost a massive and massively important folder.

Would that come under data retrieval? If so, we took our mac to a blokey near London Bridge station who was fab. Could dig details out if that helps and you can ring and see if he does 'home visits'?

Oh, would you mind?
Thankyou.

baked have you / him tried the most obvious (ie using spotlight to search in 10.4.blah or File / Find off the Finder ? Also, it is easy to rename a folder because, once highlighted, hitting 'ENTER' immediately allows you to rename the folder, so it's really easy (especially after using Windows) to do this and end up with some random / wrong name. It would be worth searching for a particular filename in the folder, or if, for example they were spreadsheets or images etc. a .xls /.jpg etc.

Am I allowed to post this here? Oh well, if not, I'm sure someone will get it deleted!! He did a load of work for us when I lost all my itunes, photos, movies etc but he got it all back for me

Yes, that makes a difference because those are not renamed in the same way at all as regular folders on the desktop etc.

You can only rename those folders in Mail / Preferences / Accounts IYSWIM (assuming he's using the ordinary Mail program which came with his Mac).

He could do a lot worse than open a Finder window (funny smiley Mac face bottom left of dock usually), then click his home folder (his name, left hand pane, just below 'Desktop'), then click 'Library' and then click 'Mail' as this is where the mail folders are stored. Can he see that his one is missing here ? Has he maybe tried to rename it here ? Has he perhaps moved a folder from here to some other place by accident ? (He will be able to see the naming convention used too 'Mac-johndoe' if he uses a Mac dot com address or 'Pop-johndoe' if he uses a POP3 server etc.

hth (a bit)

thanks so much to both of you, I have passed both suggestions on.

(Of course, I presume he's looked in the Trash ? !!!)

bakedpotatooooowoooh · 12/10/2006 17:11

Oh my, now that's a suggestion.

Will pass it on!

(I do mean the Trash icon on the dock bar, I'm not trying to be funny haha like I usually am, you know, full of wit etc.)

bakedpotatooooowoooh · 12/10/2006 17:20

However I have a sinking heart about this, overall.

If he has a dot mac account is it conceivable he used the Backup Application to possibly backup his e-mail to the Apple servers ?

(just thinking aloud)
