Good restaurant - central London or SW London/Surrey - suggestions needed!

Have prevaricated for so long as to what to do for my 40th at the end of the month that I have lost the will to live. But have just seen the date and realise that have probably left it far too late to get into a "special" restaurant - so can anyone recommend a good/great one that isn't so fashionable that I should have put my name down at birth... or at least two months ago? Central or SW London favoured locations.

Chez Bruce - might be hard to get a table - depends on the day of the week I think

Ellbell · 11/10/2006 22:45

Moro?

Ellbell · 11/10/2006 22:46

Congratulations, by the way. Have a lovely time.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/10/2006 22:47

chez bruce.

our particular favourite is louvaine on st john's hill. but that might be not snazzy enough, just really really lovely local restaurant that has never disappointed on our many visits.

erm. enoteca in putney.

erm erm erm

are you still around tomorrow?

HelloMama · 11/10/2006 22:49

oooh definitely chez bruce if you can get a table - it is FANTASTIC!

willow2 · 11/10/2006 22:49

Soph: Certainly am - have a heart-shaped cheese to devour that DH brought back from France last time.

Thanks Ellbell - good tip for Moro is to just walk in and say you have a table booked. Worked for us in the past!

glass house at Kew; Canyon in Richmond - food not brilliant at canyon but fab location

HelloMama · 11/10/2006 22:51

you may still be able to get a table, I think we only booked about 2 weeks before we went. Butlers Wharf Chop House is very nice too, next to tower bridge, so you can go for a romantic walk by the river afterwards. Pont de la Tour is good, but a bit poncey.

hatwoman · 11/10/2006 22:54

People's Palace on the SOuth Bank; Baltic by Southwark tube

Heathcliffscathy · 11/10/2006 22:56

if it is just the two of you i would deffo try chez bruce, esp if you haven't been before.

it is fantastic.

don't talk to CD about it though. she hates the place as allegedly they got hoity about her and her crew laughing too much there (i have been absolutely rat arsed and banging on table, post wedding meal there and they didn't bat an eyelid though).

willow2 · 11/10/2006 22:58

More likely to be 4 of us - have never been and want to go badly now as just looked at web site. Didn't realise he was ex Chez Max - which was/is v good too.

Glasshouse in Kew is very nice and we had a mid week meal there when we couldn't get into Chez Bruce for my birthday.

Sonny's or Riva in Barnes are also nice, as is Redmond's in Sheen, but that is in a rather unattractive location on the Upper Richmond Road.

willow2 · 11/10/2006 23:16

HA HA HA. I think you'll find that Sheen is actually quite desirable. But not sure about Redmonds though. The Victoria is nicer if you are out SW14 way. Riva I never order well at - haven't been to Sonnys in yonks but heard it's very good at mo'.

Thanks for suggestions so far.

agree with sonny's (barnes) and redmond's (sheen)

i love la trompette, just over the river in chiswick

in town, what about the wolseley?

willow2 · 12/10/2006 09:40

Only ever had average meals at Redmonds - have they got a new chef or summat?

OP posts:
willow2 · 12/10/2006 09:46

Chez Bruce could do a table at 7pm - party on, not.
La Trompette can manage 4 of us at 9 but not 6.
Anyone tried Le Vacherin in Chiswick?

willow, the glasshouse is the same people as chez bruce i think.

it has good reputation, but i've never been there.

lemonaid · 12/10/2006 09:57

Yes, Glasshouse is same owner as Chez Bruce and La Trompette and is also good.

willow2 · 12/10/2006 10:01

Have a thinga bout Glasshouse - went there once and, despite having booked ages in advance, were given such a god-awful table that we left. Was either that or have door bashing into me everytime someone arrived.

Has anyone been to Mju - Japanese at Millenium hotel in Knightsbridge? There's a spend £100 get a free hotel room doing the rounds!

Heathcliffscathy · 12/10/2006 10:05

no haven't.

what about six over six on kings road...that's great fun and the food is right up your street...fusiony oriental. had an anniversary there once and we had a scream.

most romantic goes to maggiores in covent garden....if you can get a table at the back, stunning. best bday ever that was.

bundle · 12/10/2006 10:09

dh raves about Sheekey's

lemonaid · 12/10/2006 10:11

Launceston Place in South Kensington was really good a few years back -- haven't been for a while though so can't swear to it right now.

The Bleeding Heart in Central London is always good IME.
