Does anyone know of anyone that has come out of prison?

If so i would be grateful if you could answer some questions.

Did it work?

Did they keep themselves to themselves when they got out?

What kind of mood were they in when they got out?

Were they sorry for their crime?

Did they reoffend?

Were they interested in revenge?

TIA

me too Fairyfly. Should you not be getting some sort of liaison/support about this btw?

throckenholt · 11/10/2006 09:18

is there a victim support group you can go to ? (I assume from the other comments you may be the victim - can't quite remember your story though - so sorry if I am wrong).

In answer to your questions - no I don't know anyone - but think it would very much depend on the individual concerned.

A large number do reoffend - but again it probably depends on the type of crime and the peer group they move in.

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:20

Thankyou Batters and Marina.

I am getting Liason and he has applied for early parole and to move back to where i live. Nobody can give me any definite answers as to what will happen so i am just trying to get things into perspective as i don't want to get carried away with fear.

Hi throkenhalt, i deal with prison liason, i'm not that interested in victim support counselling, i just want to have realistic nd cold hard facts of how my life may be when he returns.

Piffle · 11/10/2006 09:27

FF I know nothing about what you have been through
But I got a letter from parole board recently and they are letting someone out whom I am quite sure might try and find me for revenge as well.
I did make a submission and they are writing in a 20 year bond that he stays away from me, has no contact with me or he goes back and serves full sentence and extra for breach.Could you get something similar?
Mine was stalker/rape/assault btw

gothicmama · 11/10/2006 09:28

FF to be honest I don't think anyone can tell the cold hard facts of how it will be cos no-one knows how he is thinking or how he coped in prison or if he had any rehab.

The best advice I can give you is that you will scared and concerned and frustrated because you don't know, it does not matter stay in control and try not to be scared THink of ways to help you stay in control if you do see him,
If he becomes a threat to you then contact the police ASAP and look at gettig an injunction. Hopefully he will have reformed and will not want to cross your path.

edam · 11/10/2006 09:31

would liaison/victim support/police be able to put in a panic button for you?

katierocket · 11/10/2006 09:32

Bloody hell ff, he's not due out already is he. HOpefully police liason can give you a better idea of what to expect but presumably everyone is going to be different.

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 09:33

Good idea Edam - I'm sure they would.

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 09:34

Was just about to write that myself katierocket! Is that it???!?!!?! for what he did to you?

F*cking outrageous

anorak · 11/10/2006 09:41

Is there no chance of your moving away? If you went to the council do you think they would find you somewhere?

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:41

They are puting in an appeal for him to not be released or come back here. I am just preparing myself if it doesn't work.as everyone is aware PRisons are full. My initial reaction is to move. Immediately. At the moment it is all ifs and buts but it has made me think about him and that is something i have been avoiding.

Sorry piffle, that mus have scared you.

I will ask for a panic button, i had one before, but tbh if he is coming back here i am off.

Funny how one incident can map your life isn't it.

I would like to know seriously if any statistics show about the questions i've asked.

The situation hasn't just made me think about myself but be aware of the entire system and really consider if it is a good one and works.

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:44

No anorak, i have a life plan and i am not going to go to the council and change it because of him. I want to graduate and buy my own house and he is not going to take that away from me.

If i was to move i would privately rent again.

OP posts:
throckenholt · 11/10/2006 09:45

really consider if it is a good one and works.

as an outsider looking in I think the answer is - yes for some - but obviously not enough otherwise there would not be the serial inmates, and a rising prison population.

katierocket · 11/10/2006 09:46

You can find out reoffending stats from this site www.statistics.gov.uk/ but not sure how much real use that will be to you. I think you definitely need a panic button for safety and to speak to Police liason about what they think.

bundle · 11/10/2006 09:51

there was a really thoughtful piece on Newsnight a few weeks ago, about the prison system in Denmark (in series on best public services in the world) and they really did have great results re: re-offending (only 1/3 there, but 2/3 in UK) but the approach in this country is quite different...

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:52

i watched to programmes last night, watchdog and the Mr King doc. both told me it didn't.

If you're deluded you just are.

Piffle · 11/10/2006 09:54

Like you FF I wish someone who had contact with the fucker in prison could tell me some inside knowledge
Despite it being parole boarded, no one can tell me how he quafified for it?

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:55

2 0ut 0f 3?

F me.

i will get an alarm but believe it or not when i was witing for him to go to court they only had one in a huge area and when another girl got attacked they took it off me

Astounding.

OP posts:
fairyfly · 11/10/2006 09:57

Piffel i said to them how can i possible make an educated decision when i don't know the state of his mind? Anyhow, don't they all go to couselling just to get parole, not to learn anything.

OP posts:
BATtymumma · 11/10/2006 09:57

I worked with Young offenders and to be honest the reaction was different all the time.
some came out and they were adament thatthey never wanted to go back again, they were very withdrawn and just wanted to get on with their lives and forget this ever happened.

there were others who thought that prison was a walk in the park and couldn't care less.

I don't know you story im afraid but i can tel your obvious.y worried about the prospect of someone being released.
If he hasn't yet beent to the parole board maybe you could writte to the board and give your views as the victim.

The parole board basicly have to evaluate whether the person has demonstrated remorse, whether he has learned by his time in prison and his risk of re offending.
they do take into account his plansa for when he leaves prison.

if you writte about your fears of him moving bakc to your home town and why your so worried they make take this into account.

i can make no promises that this will be taken into account but it can't hurt...and at least it shows just how concerned youa re about things.

bundle · 11/10/2006 09:59

ff, it says 2/3 on the blurb on the Newsnight site..have a look at the film they did in Denmark if you have time, it was v interesting. sorry to shock you, it really is astounding isn't it? but that's across all crimes (twocs, shoplifting etc) I suppose.

wannaBe1974 · 11/10/2006 10:00

ff I know nothing of your situation but i know two people who have been to prison. I'm guessing that the person you are afraid of is someone who has committed a violent crime against you so I'm not sure if any of this will help you at all

The first served a year of a 2 year sentence for dealing extacy. I know that a couple of times after he was let out his house was raded by the police but they never found any drugs. This happened within a year of him being let out. Since then he has started his own business, he hasn't been in trouble with the police, and his dp gae birth to a baby girl a couple of months ago. it was about 10 years ago that he went to jail.

The second was my cousin, aI know little of the situation as I hadn't seen him since I was 9. But he was given an 18 month sentence for gbh/abh I can't remember which. He served about half of his sentence I think and when he got out of prison he joined the army and has never looked back. He has totally turned his life around from being a violent thug with no prospects and he was last in Iraq I think. As I say I don't really know him but my nan says he's written to her and has said that prison changed him totally.

hth

fairyfly · 11/10/2006 10:02

BATy. they have been to see me nd want to fight it, they asked to visit so they could put my side across when his parole date comes up.

Like i said though it is hard to come to a decision as i don't want to punish him more if he is aware of what he did and has come to some realisation of how a civilised man behaves.

Maybe i will never see him again, maybe he wont be allowed back here. I just feel a lot more in control and safer when i think of every scenario and process it until i have a better grasp.
