...your supermarket/foodbill? I went to the supermarket on Saturday and spent £80, I just got back from another trip having spent £50. All my 5+ fruit and veg were there, the only 'treat items' were;

  1. 2 large packs of Walkers Sensations (both eaten by me in record time, pre-menstrual)
  2. Elizabeth Shaw mint crisp chocolates (entertaining on Sunday, but the bulk eaten by me, same reason as above)
  3. St Ives rosemary and ginko firming body lotion (because I ate the above)
  4. ELC rainstick and puzzle for dd.
  5. Various organic meat instead of generic farmed stuff (for my conscience and dp who tends to inspect EVERYTHING)

Is £130 about average, way too much, under what most people spend?? On the plus side, I did refuse to pay for a jar of artichoke hearts in my local deli yesterday when I realised it was £6!! Normally I would have been so embarrassed, paid anyway and rushed out, instead I put my foot down and told her the jar was too expensive.

PS. No organic chicken in the supermarket, so will buy that from the butcher on Friday when I need it. It never ends.

I spent 165 in Waitrose on Thursday afternoon and we've already run out of food. Thats the cost of living in the country and having to cater for friends desperate to escape from London for the Easter weekend.

Freckle · 14/04/2004 16:21

I spend an awful lot less now that I do the bulk of my food shopping online. Previously I could easily spend £130+ in one hit - and still go back for more a few days later. That's for me, dh and 3 boys. Not having the boys with me didn't always means that I'd spend less as I am a impulse buyer. Dh has said that my food shopping has become more boring since I do it online, but I do try and ensure that I pop the odd "new" thing in from time to time. Currently spending between £70-80 online. I still have to go out during the week to top up on milk, etc. but try to keep those shops to a low spend.

Northerner · 14/04/2004 16:22

I spend on average about £70 a week for me dh and ds. Am in a supermarket rut at the moment and always buy the same old stuff. Don't have alot of inspiration though.

jodiemay · 14/04/2004 16:28

For me, dh and ds, we spend about £60 per week at Tesco's and we buy a lot of Own Brand products (ie baked beans) but we have plenty of fruit (mainly at breakfast time) I would still like to cut this down as I am a SAHM and it is a lot of money!

SpringChicken · 14/04/2004 16:37

Far far too much.

We live a stones throw away from Sainsbury's - i always find myself popping in for some bread and Milk and coming out having spent £30 - it is so easy to do.

At the minute DP and i proabbly spend £80 a week on shopping but this is bacause i go to Sainsbury's - once baby arrives i will be going somewhere much much cheaper (If i can find that place )

kiwisbird · 14/04/2004 16:44

£85-£100 per week, includes water filters too... WE buy mostly organic stuff, Sainsburys main shopping , then top up at Waitrose for those "essential" items, like green and blacks on sale

Easy · 14/04/2004 16:51

We really must try on-line shopping. Previously I've only used it at christmas to avoid the queueing up on Christmas eve, cos I didn't like the idea of paying £5 a time for delivery. But so many MNers say they save money that way.

How do you get so organised to order what you need? I'm sure I'd forget loads of stuff, then have to go to sainsbugs anyway (spending again)

LipstickMum · 14/04/2004 17:16

Easy, I have tried online shopping but it didn't work too well for me, which was annoying, plus the fee on top of it. I am impressed that someone only spends £60, very, very impressed!

we spend about £80 a week and thats still too much

Posey · 14/04/2004 21:00

Around about £60 on the big shop, then top up the milk, bread, fruit and veg.
Find I'm actually spending less since having ds despite the stuff I now need for him, because I don't wander round looking, just follow my list, bung it in the trolley and go while he's still happy!

SenoraPostrophe · 14/04/2004 21:01

If I do the shopping, then about £50.

If dp does it, then anything up to £200!

Janh · 14/04/2004 21:06

Trouble with online shopping is, you don't get the bargains like our Jamie Oliver rib of beef last Sat, £23 reduced to £9. (And it was veryveryvery lush!)

podgegl20 · 14/04/2004 21:07

If you shop at Sainsburys online on Tues, Wed, Thurs and spend over £60 there is no delivery fee. Also look out for money off vouchers in magazines like 'Good Food'

colette · 14/04/2004 21:09

Easy
I have found on line at tescos does save a bit. Yes it is a bit boring but needs must!I keep a list pinned up in the kitchen and just add to it when I notice we are running out of something. Also I have heard thta they take sainsburys vouchers - so if you have a money off voucher for on line at sainsburys you can use it at tescos. Also delivery is slightly cheper midweek, if you think of the time it takes to shop and pack it all into the car the delivery cost isn't so much.

nightowl · 15/04/2004 01:48

about £100 a week...dont understand it. thats just for 4 carrier bags of stuff for me, a 6 year old and baby.

LipstickMum · 15/04/2004 03:20

Hmmmm maybe I should give the online shop another go...

Sometimes there are bargains which are for online shoppers only. You can also check out their offers straightaway - they have a special section for money off offers, or BOGOFS, etc. I always go there first. If they have some really good offers, I'll stock up quite a bit and put the extra in the cellar or garage. Only works for non-perishables though.

I've started using Ocado recently (Waitrose food). They don't charge a delivery fee if you spend more than £75 (which I tend to do anyway) and, if they substitute something because they haven't got what you ordered, they deduct the cost of the substitution, and, if they don't have a suitable substitute, they deduct the cost of the item they can't supply! This is brilliant. I have got pssed off at Tesco and Sainsbury with some of their substitutions, e.g. I'll order 5 x 4ltrs milk @ £.135 and they'll substitute it with 20 x 1ltr @ 71p and charge me the higher price. Hmm. I know they say you can refuse to accept the substitutions, but I need* milk and don't want to have to go out specially to get one or maybe two items.

lou33 · 15/04/2004 11:29

Just spent about £85 online for 6 of us.

Mum2Ela · 15/04/2004 11:34

There was a thread like this not long ago and someone put a speadsheet type thing on it so that you can 'list' what you need and menu meals for the week and stick to it when you shop.

Does anyone know where it was?

Kayleigh · 15/04/2004 11:38

Sainsburys are offering free delivery at the moment on orders over £60 when you have delivery midweek (tues/weds/thurs).
Have to say though Sainsburys are bloody awful. 50% of the time they are late delivering, and their substiutions are cr*p. I find Ocado is the best and then Tesco.

happy1 · 15/04/2004 12:06

We always spend loads on what seems like not very much, and I always end up forgetting stuff and having to go back. Tescos and Sainsburys don't deliver to my area which is really annoying when you've got a toddler and newborn in tow! We are trying to keep it to about £70 a week, and an extra £100 a month for nappies(for newborn and a toddler) and milk formula.
