Has anyone taken a baby camping?

Youngest dd will be 10 months when we might go, oldest nearly 4. Has anyone taken a baby camping in ordinary tent? Is there any risk of them getting cold/damp/ill? Any tips?

I'd put off weaning her until you've been on hols if you can....which is what I did with our holidays to make it easier, then you can take the steribottles. Check out first though as my cousin's baby wouldn't take the teats that came with them!

We were in Devon last August camping and although the nights weren't balmy it was never a problem as long as they were snuggled up in their sleeping bags. It gets quite stuffy in a tent when there's a whole family in there, I don't think you'd find it a problem - if you would normally be the kind to enjoy camping, go for it.

Correct if I'm wrong, but if DD will be 6 months anyway, you wouldn't need to sterilise anyway would you?

Tatcity - unsure on the sterilising rule - it all changes all the time - I cant keep up!

Think you are ok not sterilising spoons and bowls at 6 months, though when I did this with dd1 she got thrush in her mouth which took 3 courses of nizarol to clear. Definitle bottles for at least 12 months

I'm sure if you're careful washing thoroughly would suffice. YOu wouldn't want to start changing the type of bottle would you in case they don't take to it?

The advice changes so quickly you're right it's hard to keep up. Just go with what feels right for you - too much information sometimes isn't there....

I agree we get burdened with info and we don't follow our own instincts and common sense enough sometimes! (hard when hv's midwives and our ever so helpful mothers are throwing stuff at us though!)

Never did take any notice of HVs though.

Good point.

Don't take mine to HV now, always used to come home from health centre worrying about something they'd pointed out. Don't even know what 17 month old weighs, but she's bouncy and happy - which is what matters. When I tell other mums I don't see HV they look at me horrified! Mumsnet has made me realise most people feel the same about them!

We camp lots with babies and toddlers. it's no worse than any other sort of holiday with them

And can be better. They usually love it, often sleep better than indoors, and have lots of space to run around. we never use a travel cot, just snuggle up to them to keep them warm and happy.

I'd suggest making sure you have waterproof cagoule suits and wellies if the baby is mobile, especially for a crawler who will get soaked in wet grass otherwise. Lots of warm clothes, obviously. Campsites with washing machines and tumble dryers can be well worth it.

Breastfeeding little babies helps a lot. For sterilising anything, use tablets (from Boots and other places) rather than trying to take sterlisers or boiling water for ages.

Other things we've found useful - you can construct a "babygym" easily with a rope and a few toys on clips to amuse a young baby, or hang things off a guy rope.

also, maybe expect to cook less than you would normally when camping - check out local pubs and cafes, get takeaways, etc, anything to reduce the workload.

ps Maddi yes you were just lucky with the raspberry leaf tea and pineapple. like Emmagee I'm expecting my 3rd (overdue now) and nothing is shifting this baby

MADDI · 15/04/2004 09:36

Oh dear, seems I am lucky to have early babies, fennel!
Love the tip about baby gyms out of guy ropes, will definitely try that one. And will still be breastfeeding little one so easier!
