DS1 aged 4 had his feet measured today for some sandals but Clarks only go up to a G fitting and he's measuring 11.5 H. Does anyone know of any shops where I can get extra wide sandals (dont want trainers or shoes. Any advice much appreciated.

Start-Rite no good? Brantano shops also get rave reviews, but I'd phone to ask about the widths they stock.

SEXGODDESS · 13/04/2004 19:44

DD always had wide feet (still has obviously) I think Startright always fitted better as they were more generous.

grumpyzebra · 13/04/2004 19:50

Oh, and John Lewis do wide children's shoes, worth a ring anyway.

popsycal · 13/04/2004 19:56

I will be watching this thread with interest - my 20 months old has wide feet 6H at the moment......

Bozza · 13/04/2004 20:01

I'd try Startrite - and also a style with velcro straps over the top (IYSWIM) give a bit more scope for adjustment.

I always had the same problem with my dss's. Dss2 was also, still is, H fitting. When they were younger, I used to buy them elefanten sandals (german brand) because they were soft leather, had adjustable straps and were the only sandal type shoe that fit him properly. They also came in quite funky colours, so he never complained. Still sold at larger children's shoe shops. They're not cheap, but neither are Clarks!! HTH

Do they only go up to a G in sandals ?? My ds has got shoes from Clarks in an E fitting i'm sure.

Nutcracker · 13/04/2004 20:14

I mean he has shoes from clarks in a H fitting.

popsycal · 13/04/2004 20:37

h is wider than E
i think
i am sure

jodiemay · 13/04/2004 20:38

My son also wears an H fitting shoe, and we get his shoes from Clarke's! Try E Bay, they sometimes have H Fittings for sale, that are more or less brand new!

I went to get my ds some sandals today for our hols, and asked the question about width fittings AND, you're right, Clarke's do NOT do width fittings in sandals. The woman told me that because they are seasonal, and only in stock for a short time they do not do widths. My ds has a very high instep, so we had to go for a half size larger, which helped with his G fitting.

Janh · 29/04/2004 20:54

froot, huge sympathy for your dd, I have v large v wide feet with v high instep and still get frustrated with eg boots. My feet just won't go in. Nowadays I tend to live in trainers/open sandals anyway but now and again I look at nice smart shoes and boots, try to try them on, kick and scream a bit (even with bigger sizes) and go back to trainers.

Hope for her sake her feet stretch and narrow a bit, like your ds's!

CountessDracula · 29/04/2004 20:56

Birkenstocks? They do little ones and they are adjustable. As long as you don't mind your child looking like he/she is off to the labour conference. Here is the site

CountessDracula · 29/04/2004 20:57

make that liberal conference. sorry!

smellymelly · 29/04/2004 21:10

www.Verbaudet.co.uk (sorry can't do links)

do some really gorgeous sandals for £19.99 with the velcro straps and a washable inner sole, which I had to send back coz they were so wide on ds, and dd's feet. They do them in lots of different colours too, but if you do want them then find the code on website then phone it through as it is quicker, esp for popular items.

Got ds age 5 some cool sandals from gap today. elastic straps allow for plenty of adjustment.

Just saw this thread. I have just been to buy DD2 aged 18 mnths her second pair of shoes - first were 2 1/2 G (she is a tiny wee poppet)
This time they were 3 H and Startrite only had one shoe (a rather two - it was a pair!) - a very plain t bar leather design (minimal to say the least) in Navy with absolutely no extras.

I did get her a pair of Doodles size 3 1/2 that fitted but I wanted a sturdier pair as well.

Are there any specialists for tiny wide feet?

Our local shoe shop is fab but stocks a lot of European shoes which seem to be very narrow.........

Fio2 · 19/05/2004 13:45

we get our son H fitting stuff from Clarks. Are you sure its not just this actual outlet that doesnt stock them?

bundle · 19/05/2004 13:47

I'd second Birkenstocks (got them on my own comfy feet just now ) - dd had a pair last summer which took a bit of getting used to but intend to get her another pair this year.

A thread close to my heart, as my dd1 had size 4 feet at the age of 7, and we were pushed to find shoes in that size designed for little girls rather than teenage slappers.

One thing I did learn is that the Start-rite website has a section with details of the full range of shoes available each season, including details of the sizes and colours available in each.

I've also learnt the hard way that most stockists will only have a fraction of the available range in stock, depending on what they think they can sell (big retailers like John Lewis are no exception here) and may well tell you that a particular shoe doesn't come in size x when in fact they just don't have it.

If you approach the shop with exact details of what you want they should be able to order it fairly easily, with no obligation to buy if it doesn't fit.

I can't get any shoes to fit DD here. She is a G fitting, size 33 (think that's a 1) and age 5. Last Saturday we bought her the only pair in the shop that fitted her (we tried on over 20 pairs!). She can't be the only child in Belgium with wide feet, can she?! They don't have different width fittings here, you just have to rely on the shop assistant telling you what comes up a bit wider and trying.

Off to Bluewater tomorrow to see what they have to offer!

LIZS · 19/05/2004 16:34

Tanzie,

ds has wide feet and we have found, through trial and error, that Naturino and Geox fit him best althought there are some other European brands ie. Elefanten, Richter who do width variations. If you are in Bluewater try John Lewis as they often stock them.
