and my neighbours , were its only really wide enough for a path not a car FFS and also theres a tree on the other side and a car parked accross the road paralell to my drive, which makes it VVV hard to swing out. Now my poor mums gotta do nursury run. Neighbours called police but got put through to control for an age , so no luck with that yet. If I had an emergency with dd2 (7wks old) itd be a right faff to get to anywere.

Will they tow it away , give a ticket ? Its a right pita as had to get shopping.

Some people are so selfish , weve never had this in the 4yrs both of us have lived in these houses, either theyre new to the area , plain STOOPID or just bloody thoughtless. They most probably wont be back till this evening , as theyve parked for the station up the road.

key it

intergalacticwalrus · 03/10/2006 10:24

That sort of thing pisses me right off.

Hope you get it sorted pronto.

melsy · 03/10/2006 10:31

dh said council can tow it , feel a bit nervous , road rage/ retribution and all that. People get really agressive these days.

getting the council to tow would be reasonable, as would leaving them a very assertive note under the windscreen wiper explaining what inconvenience they have put you to.

CovenOVeneer · 03/10/2006 10:35

The cheek of some people. My MIL lives near a private nursery, I made the mistake of popping over there at pick up time to let her dog out (as she was away all day). I parked in their drive and when I came out a woman was getting out of her 4x4monstority which she had parked directly across the drive . I told her she culdn't park there as she was blocking my way, she simple said there is nowhere else to park and she was late for picking her child up and with that dissappeared up the road. So I had towait 10-15mins unil she returned and moved her car . No apology or anything, I was fuming and gobsmacked at the same time.

geekgrrl · 03/10/2006 10:40

get it towed then, and if they have the cheek to complain, say you had a medical emergency to attend.

HallgerdaLongcloak · 03/10/2006 10:40

The council won't do it, I'm afraid (I know because I've been in a similar situation) - it'll have to be the police.

I wouldn't recommend illegal direct action, tempting though it be, but have you checked whether you could shop them for an out of date tax disc?

sweetmonkey · 03/10/2006 10:42

we had some people move in opposite us a little while back. they parked across the road but opposite our drive so we couldnt get the car up the drive. i ended up having to parkl round the corner as i couldnt get up the drive and just put a polite note asking them not to block the drive in future as it meant we couldnt park or get in and out (they have a drive way too) and when i went out later on to go out they had ripped up the note and put it in our front garden. i was . cant even bring myself to talk to them since it happened

parking opposite a drive isnt illegal i was told when it happened to us ages ago, only if you park over the actual drive entrance

melsy · 03/10/2006 10:55

neighbours put a note on now , not sure whats written on it.

Yes agree any legal action makes me quite unsettled, just dont want a nasty reaction , as theres always a chance.

OP posts:
melsy · 03/10/2006 10:57

I could try and swing out , but theyve made the gap only slightly wider than my car with the tree being there, just dont want to chance banging any car or mine with the tree.

soooooooooooooooooooooooooo effin annoying.

I think it is illegal to park in front of a drive if you block a car in. However, you are allowed to park there if the drive is empty - even if it means that the homeowner can't access their drive.
We have a dropped kerb where people often park - my neighbour often tells us that they can as we don't own the road itself.
Still, it's very annoying.

frumpygrumpy · 03/10/2006 11:02

OOOOOohhhh maddening!!! Have you tried beeping your horn constantly to see if they are in the neighbourhood? I'd be inclined to bash it but then I'm due a period......

melsy · 03/10/2006 11:03

ahhh I didnt know that , how annoying , bit of a legal loophole really. So they are parked illegally as my car is on the drive?

rnb did you pass your test?

speedymama · 03/10/2006 11:55

From a local council website

Q My neighbours are constantly parking across my drive and blocking my access. Can anything be done to help?

A If you cannot gain access to your property, either business or private, because of inconsiderate parking then obstruction has be caused and can be dealt with by the Police. Alternatively, markings can be placed on the highway to highlight the access. Whilst these markings are not legally enforceable they are very effective. Assessment will be required by an Highways officer before these markings can be used.

A typical keep clear (I-line marking) costs £50.

When approval has been granted for lining outside residential properties it would be helpful to try and keep areas free of parked cars. The contractors will move on to the next job, if they are delayed in this way.

LadyDooM · 03/10/2006 14:25

There are alot of rude people in this sad world isnt there. I cannot get used to them myself and wish they could all be shipped to their own country to wind up and be rude to each other.

Once I parked my car in a parking area in front of a block of flats. I parked in between the lines and went in to visit a friend, when I came out a car had parked so close to my car I couldnt get in between the cars. I had to go round to other side with my kids and slide over into the drivers seat. Then backing out was very difficult , I was tempted to hit their car... so very tempted... But I managed to get out. This is after knocking on every door to find the owner, which was never found. Grrr i really hate people sometimes.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 03/10/2006 14:41

We sometimes get people parking across our driveway (well, its more like a track although it quite obviously is the only access to 4 houses). I usually stick a sarcastic note on their windscreen along the lines of:

" CONGRATULATIONS! You have successfully blocked the access to not just ONE, but FOUR houses. In future, please park more considerately"

LadyDooM · 03/10/2006 14:45

Dont you sometimes get the urge to "push" their car/s out of the way...LOL Bet they would think twice before doing that again...:S

Bramshott · 03/10/2006 15:08

Actually, you can move a parked car can't you - just need a few (3 or 4) people - ideally hefty blokes. Sure I have seen it done in the past.

3littlefrogs · 03/10/2006 15:52

That happened to a friend of mine some years ago. She lived near a tube station and the car was parked across her drive all day. Her dd had a severe asthma attack and she had to call an ambulance as she couldn't get out. Took ages to come and the child was on a ventilator for 48 hours. Police at that time said they couldn't move the car. Some people are so selfish.

LadyDooM · 03/10/2006 15:59

Hehe I was thinking more along the lines of pushing their car with mine sorta thing just a little push of course...

iamapieceofcheesecake · 03/10/2006 16:10

melsy, has the car gone yet, or could you wait for the owner to get back and then have a few words with them. They may be a little more understanding if you spoke to them face to face rather than leaving a note which may make them mad.
I know you are mad and we would all love to cause their property some harm, but as they would know that you live there maybe it's best to be civil?
