Perhaps a question for the 'proper' country girls (I'm an ex pat townie rather than a country thorough bred so I am ignorant on these things).

It's great weather for line drying washing, and I have a load ready to go out...but there is a delicate waft of 'eau de manure' in my garden, which I think is blowing over from the field next door where the farmer is busy muck spreading (or it could be the sewage works 5 miles away - but unlikely)

If I hang my washing out in these circumstances will it reek of sh*t? - am I better off hanging it on a clothes horse and leaving it in the spare room to dry?

(P.S. I know how spacey this sounds, but this is a serious question - pregnancy has rendered my incapable of thinking through anything logically so sorry if you are thinking ....puuuulllease!)

Hi, hmc! I'm not entirely sure but I think it depends how strong it is - I get this problem with smoke from people's chimneys in the spring and autumn and sometimes the clothes smell and sometimes they don't.

If you've never done it before, try it this time as an experiment!

Hang DHs clothes out and see if he notices - good way of experimenting and you won't have to smell like shit!!

As a country girl until adulthood, I'd say the answer is possibly Depends on how strong the odour is. Hanging smelly clothes outside to get rid of the smell works, so conversely putting clean clothes outside in a smelly wind could do the reverse.

I'm with Twinkie. If dh notices, then don't do it again and at least no one thinks that you stink.

ha ha at Twinkie's advice! I'd do that too I think

littlemissbossy · 13/04/2004 12:18

i live next door to farm and my clothes don't stink of shit ... although come to think of it ... there was a bloke the other day in the local shop trying to sniff my shirt ... just thought he was being a bit over-friendly!!!

A friend of mine has parents who live on a dairy farm, where her children spend most of their spare time and her Mum sometimes helps her with the washing. She very kindly has passed a whole load of her daughters clothes down for my DD. They smell of fabric conditioner mixed 'eau de manure' - she definitely doesn't notice it, but I'd hang them inside if I were you !

Actually I was thinking along the lines of Twinkie's suggestions i.e. just hanging out dh's stuff as an experiment (whilst keeping my clothes and dd's in doors). Terrible aren't we!
