HI i'm a student and have to incorporate clinical governance in to a case study about a 72 year old lady and the fact she has waited two years for an operation. Any help or links to websites gratefully received Thanks

What's the operation? And does this particular op have the same waiting list time throughout the country based on clinical decisions?

gothicmama · 12/04/2004 16:00

She is waiting for operation on major joints to increase mobility, at present she is sleeping downstairs her husband (75)is her sole carer and he helps her dress etc. other than that no further info included in case study

Sorry gothicmama, I can't really think of anything to help you. In my experience clinical governance covers things like drug protocols and best practise based on a national pool of clinincal data so that the patient can recieve the absolute best known treatment at any particular time. I suppose in this case the clinical governance is tempered by the limited budget and the demand for the service required by this lady. Are you a student nurse?

This site might help - in Scotland anyway.
here

Try www.google.com and type in clinical governance. You should get loads of info.

could use 7 pillars of clin gov - PRACUSE is my mnemonic-
patient involvement (has she been offered any involvement, alternatives to waiting, support etc)
risk management (what is risk of deterioration, risk to carer's health, risk of falls, and how are risks being managed)
clinical audit (what is average waiting time, has she been waiting longer than this, why)
clinical effectiveness (what os impact of wait in her condition, will she need more treatment because of wait)
use of information (info on waiting times at other units perhaps, stats on what waiting does to the condition)
staff management (not sure!)
education and training (also not sure...)

this may be a bit out of date as have been on mat leave from work as clin gov facilitator (not a very good one) since nov 03,but hth

Type in CHI (Commission for Health Improvement) in the search engine. CHI are an NHS organisation whose core business is clinical governance.

Thank thank you I can now link the practical to the theory and have a much better understanding. Acnebride I think you could teach my lecturer a thing or two.
