Tooth extractions - crying just thinking about it.

Hi I am in need of support here!! Having had dreadful teeth all my life, years of braces etc it has come to the pulling out stage. (and i'm only 34). I need to have the 4 front bottom teeth and one front upper tooth out. I am absolutely petrified at the thought of it. My dentist is very nice and has said he will just need to use a local anaesthetic and he has done impressions for temporary dentures ( will be able to do something more permanent - and expensive - later). But I am just SO SCARED. Will it bleed a lot? will it hurt? will I look like a toothless hag??

Any similar experiences and advice please??

If you're that scared, ask to go to the local dental hospital and have an IV injection. You'll not be knocked out but really drowsy and not remember a thing. My ds aged 16 had his done, and they do bleed a bit. I'm really squeamish tho and he came in with blood all over his mouth and teeth and I nearly threw up!

desparatemum · 30/09/2006 15:59

Hi Jollymum. I'm more scared of how it will feel after than the actual procedure. Its a private dentist with MTV on the ceiling etc so you can ignore the discomfort whilst its happening! I'm really scared of just having this big gap!! Have booked the following day of work in case of swelling etc.. by the way my appointment is Tuesday afternoon. Have asked dh to pick me up afterwards as I don't fancy the idea of sitting in a rush hour train bleeding! (Although Id probably get a seat to myself).

Dd had to get back teeth out last month in preparation for a brace. She was like and really scared and would burst out in tears when talking about it. She got a sedative in her arm in a drip type thing which made her woozy, then they gave her the numbing injections in her mouth.

She never felt a thing, and when we were leaving asked to come back!! It made her drunk like(she's 12) and she started talking in an Engish accent(we're in Glasgow)It was nowhere near the experience she was worried about. Like you, she was living the experience before it had even happened, like a bad dream over and over again. We talked it through and decided it was pointless to do this and just wait for IT to happen, and in the end it was fine.

The bleeding stopped quickly and all she needed was Calpol for that night only and back to school the next day.

Give the dentist a call and tell that you are scared and they will be able to do something to help you. They won't know if you don't, and they will have options rather than just a local. (and here's a wee cuddle xx)

Sammac, thanks - needed a wee cuddle!! Dentist knows how much of a wuss I am, I have even been known to cry at the hygienist. Good to hear about your dd's swift recovery!

like you I have had tooth touble over the years and have had a fair few out.don't worry about gaps. you get used to hiding it by how you open your mouth/smile.
ds had to have his front tooth built up after an acident he had IV sedation(he is 14) and loved it. talk to your dentist. good idea about being picked up. I bled a lot last time (due to dentist) and was very shakey but no pain.
want to talk more [email protected]

bumping for ComeOverneer, she's a dentist.

DM, I had some wisdom teeth out a while ago and although the pain afterwards was awful the actual extraction was ok.

As far as I;m aware wisdom teeth extraction is always awful, it certainly was in my case.

anyway, it's not wisdom teeth you're having done so I've probably just scared you sh*tless, sorry.

The few normal teeth i've had out were fine, they did bleed abit, not much though and much much less than I expected. The pain afterwards was easily managable with nurofen.

Not sure if I've made you feel better or worse but after my wisdom teeth drama I feel like I could take on any pain.

desparatemum · 01/10/2006 18:57

Hi thanks for all the replies. I'm still nervous but hoping the pain will be bearable. I did childbirth without any drugs so this should be a doddle eh??

the pain really isn't that bad. I've had a few teeth out. I had to have one front one removed, after it absessed and caused so much pain I jsut wanted it pulled. As soon as they pulled it they put the denture in, so it kind of helped to plug the hole and I didn't have to leave toothless! Just take soem painkillers before you go.

KellyKrueger1978 · 01/10/2006 19:05

if you can do childbirth without painkillers, this will eb a doddle!

KellyKrueger1978 · 01/10/2006 19:08

another thoguht, do make sure you wear the denture! I sort of gave up on mine, and the teeth spaced out so it didn't even fit any more. I have the crappiest teeth ever, and will prob have none left by the time I reach 34!

Hi
I had a molar tooth out in Januay. Couldn't feel anything whilst it was being done apart from pulling. Afterwards felt a bit sore and tender. Feel a lot better ithout the tooth as had had trouble for years after a dentist but a filling in over an abcess.

nannyme · 01/10/2006 19:36

Sheet!

Sorry to jump on thread but I am mahorly avoiding a wisdom tooth extraction and one regular tooth extraction.

Already booked my GA. But the pain and blood afterwrad. I don't want to wake up until after the bleeding stops and would like a mouthwash too - is this possible?

I will vom if I taste blood, rest assured.

I had a tumour cut from my throat under GA and that was okay. Also 2 homebirths, so will I cope?

I'm not going if not.

Frizbe · 01/10/2006 19:45

Great thread girls, have just read it to dh, who has a mouthful of rotten teeth due to him being scared of dentists too, hoping he gets over it and goes soon, especialy now he's heard your all brave enough to go! Desperate mum, don't worry {{{Hugs}}} it will be fine, will you pop back on and tell my dh it was all ok?

desparatemum · 01/10/2006 22:13

Frizbe - I certainly will. Even if it hurts like hell!! KK1978 I think the idea is that I get the dentures straight away, and as they're all at the front I will certainly use them!

I have had several front teeth out and i am such a wuss I asked my dentist for a prescription for valium which he happily gave (didn't take it in the end as was worried how I would cope with the children afterwards) I can honestly say that the injection was the worst bit. The extractions were totally painless, just felt tugging and afterwards I downed a couple of paracetamol on my way out and another lot four hours later and that was enough. No real pain at all, no real bleeding, certainly it had stopped by the time I left the dentists. Agree if you have a denture then put it in and keep it in.

I'd take extractions over a filling any day!

desparatemum · 03/10/2006 16:32

OK I've been. The extractions didn't hurt. The injections did. I was a very brave girl!! Hubby picked me up and after 10 minutes the pain started as the anaesthetic wore off, so I quickly downed some nurofen. I feel a bit like Goofy with two bits of plastic stuck in my mouth but at the moment they look alright. Don't know when I can eat or drink or when I'll be brave enough to go outside and speak to anyone. (Have been sending texts!!) Hope these painkillers last. So, if I can do it, anyone can!!

Cheers for your support.

Hi I am only 33 and my front 2 teeth have practically had it. They have both been crowned and root canalled and posted and now I am in constant pain or discomfort. I am considering having implants but they are sooooo expensive and I am panicking so much about having them extracted that I may faint or throw up or something equally embarressing, its the whole idea of having them pulled out! Does anyone know what its like to have dentures in the front, can you talk properly, do they keep falling out, do they damage you other teeth???? This is all I think about at the moment, any words of wisdom would be gratefully recieved.
