Do you reckon in this day and age it would be feasible to replace your car with a horse and trap?

Just wondering really. Maybe not in an inner city but anywhere else? Do you reckon it would get nicked from outside the shops?

people would complain about the mess

2shoes · 29/09/2006 21:03

how would i get dd's wheelchair on it

flashingnose · 29/09/2006 21:03

Have to hold my hand up at this point and admit I know nothing about horses.

Do you really think people would complain? I was thinking about global warming (as you do) and wondered if we could all go back to horses for short journeys instead?

You'd have a trap with a ramp

Bicycles are a lot more efficient. As are feet (as in, walking).

You can get bikes to transport you, your kids, and your stuff. Much better for global warming than having a whole horse!

Mum reminisces about trying to catch the pony during the war - she said it was a hellish job and took ages.

But the carrier's cart could come back - slow deliveries to a group of people, maybe.

sansouci · 29/09/2006 21:06

Then we'd need stables and hay and we'd have muck them out or whatever you do and have shoes put on them etc, etc. My dd & her pals would be in 7ht heaven though!

flashingnose · 29/09/2006 21:08

True, but I live in a v hilly area. Was thinking about getting to the next town (6 miles with a huge hill in between) with three kids. But I take your point. Are horses bad for global warming then?

There was a silly bint in Telegraph (where else??) last week who had done precisely that. She lived in Bristol I think.

noddyholder · 29/09/2006 21:10

I would love it as am v nervous in cars and don't know why

sansouci · 29/09/2006 21:10

No worse for global warming thna my dh & his farts, I guess.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/09/2006 21:11

Horses have to eat - better to bike. I'm sure horses are better than cars (largely because using a car means you won't make 800-mile trips etc), I think.

You can do 6 miles on a bike with three kids, although it'd make you pretty fit. You need a Dutch bike, unless some of your kids can ride?

flashingnose · 29/09/2006 21:11

Is it really silly bint-ish then?

You certainly couldn't have everyone on horses, without some significant changes in infrastructure. Bikes are much more practical.

sansouci · 29/09/2006 21:12

Air travel is far, far worse than anything we do on the ground, though.

Callisto · 29/09/2006 21:12

There is a lady who lives in Oxford who has bought a pony and trap specifically to do the school run. She keeps it on the allotment I think. Brill idea IMO. Ponies are so cheap to run, a trap will cost around £500, don't have to shoe a pony if it has hard feet (welsh types) and you manage it properly, won't need hard feed through the winter, only hay, won't need stabling unless you have it clipped. Where's the drawback?

flashingnose · 29/09/2006 21:12

What's a Dutch bike? Don't tell me I'd have to peddle myself and all three kids??

hehehe fio

Callisto · 29/09/2006 21:13

Sorry missed the latest posts. Why is she a silly bint for having a pony and cart Moondog? Or is she a silly bint anyway?

moondog · 29/09/2006 21:13

That's the one I read about Callisto,yeah.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/09/2006 21:14

The Dutch do some very good child-friendly bikes - you can have the kids sitting in a sort of box in front of you, with seatbelts and a rain/windcover etc.

I bike every day with 2 kids. Not sure how far - maybe 3 miles each way, once or twice a day? (so a total of 6 to 12 miles? Not counting side trips.)

iota · 29/09/2006 21:14

callisto - vet's bills?

MegaLegs · 29/09/2006 21:14

My dh wants to retire from full time tree surgery and get a shire horse and cart and do local jobs ( for local people ). This would be fine but I'm shit scared of horses!
