My dd was so brave today!!

Dd who's 9 has extra teeth (don't know why) so today needed to get 3 removed, 2 which were through and one that was stuck up in the gum.
She had it done under local anaesthetic, and apart from her toes scrunching in her shoes and her grip tightenening on the nurse, she didn't utter a word. When the first one was out, she said, "oh is that all there is to it"
Bit painful now as the anaesthetic is wearing off, but can't believe she was so brave. She said it hurt a bit when they injected the roof of her mouth [ouch]. I reckon grown men would've made more fuss.

Aww. Bless her

well done to your dd - my mum had a split tooth removed today and was a lot less brave.

Troutpout · 28/09/2006 20:04

Wow! well done posey's girl!

ComeOVeneer · 28/09/2006 20:08

Well done. You a right to be very proud of her. (and you are right about grown men making more fuss, beleive me I've seen it). Hope you spoilt her rotten this evening. FWIW the mouth heals extremely quickly (she will probably be pain free by the morning).

She had some pain killers as soon as we got home, and have just given her some for bed time although she said it wasn't painful anymore.
They said she was ther star patient of the day and I believe them.

Got to say though, I believe in what I always preached as a nurse and which is proved to be true. If you tell someone, yes it will hurt, then they aren't shocked by the pain and trust you and recover quicker.

She is pretty blase though! We just said goodnight to her, well done etc, and she shrugged it off.

Well done to your DD; what a brave girl!

ComeOVeneer · 28/09/2006 20:26

I wholeheartedly aggreee re the honesty about pain thing. It drives me crazy when parents tell their children it isn't going to hurt as I head towards them with a needle, of course it will hurt. So they end up as you say surprised as they aren't expecting it and often so upset you can't proceed further with the treatment.

nannyme · 28/09/2006 20:32

Tell her from me she is super brave! I am still cowering at the thought of two forthcoming extractions. PLease can I have a portion of her bravery?! She has inspired me to 'get over it' actually. Tell her "thanks".

Have you seen the Topsy and Tim book? Topsy I think gets a filling and says it doesn't hurt. It really bugs me on 2 counts.
1st, it does hurt and 2nd, I use the fact that fillings hurt as amunition to get the kids to brush their teeth properly!

As nurses we always told pre-op patients about the pain they could expect afterwards. As I said, they then weren't scared when they woke up sore. And then they trusted you, if you said this won't hurt they could be sure it wouldn't.
AND it was proved by them requiring less pain killers afterwards.

Posey, my dd2 (age 4) has just finished over a year of horrid dental treatment with (almost) hardly a murmur, I'm very proud of her. You must be so proud of your dd as well! Bravo Posey Jr

Posey · 28/09/2006 20:45

Thats fantastic annie! Betyou're glad thats over. I cannot imagine my ds who's approaching 4 being like that, he would struggle to sit in the dentist's chair!

I'm sure it was worse for me watching than her having it done! I am a big cowardy custard at the dentist, I have been given an injection, told to wait in the waiting room for it to go numb, then gone home instead of staying for the filling Posey Jr is VERY brave!
