Think Aus have really strict rules on quarantine - about a year?? (I inherited a cat from someone who was emigrating there and didn't want to put Pussy through quarantine for so long. Cat is now 18, so things may have changed since then). The High Commission might be able to help.

bloss I thought it was 6 months but I think they have decided to categorise the countries and those which pose less of a risk have a shorter quarantine time.

Hi there as an aussie in the Uk , i have been given a moggie and he will be coming to back Aus with us in 3 years time. 30 days quarantine, they should fly as 'excess baggage' so word of warning the quarantine isnt the biggest issue! if they are much bigger than a jack russell it will be very expensive.
Dogs in Aus need to be licensed to the local area and wear tags with an id number on.
Be sure that you really want to stay in Aus... fabuluos country but it isnt everyones cup of tea when they get there. If posible get a relo or mate to look after the dogs untill you are setteled, it may be hard to renta a property that allows pets or you may wish to relocate to another area within a short time of your move.
Some dogs dont like the heat, it may be fairer not to take them, the flight is very long and stressful for animals so the need to be young fit and very healthy to go.
Dogs in aus also need heart worm tablets, ours get them monthly but i think the vet can give them a shot?
Check the MAFF or whatever they have changed to.. site for vaccinations before travel, double check everything. The rabies vaccine lasts for 2 years so it can be done early.
Hope that may be of some help?
I know i didnt bring my blueheeler from home with us because I felt it would be too much. He's 5 now and if he was to fly back with us he'd be 8 and i think thats too old for him to undergo it. As a result he is with some friends dog sitting him. very happy emails on a regular basis!
hope if you go you like it....
