We used to have bunk beds and neither of mine were ever hurt, dd1 was in the top one from 4 ish and even when she was shattered she still didnt fall off the ladder going for a wee in the dark, which was my worry.

i hate them for purely selfish reasons, have just got rid of dd's. I hated not being able to make it in the morning and the space it took up, her room looks much bigger now

It' a PITA to change the sheets in the top bunk

i loved my bunk bed (when i was little) i had the bottom and my sis had the top, she snored though. they're fun for making tents too

I don't have a problem with kids sleeping in bunk beds at other peoples houses.
I wouldn't have them myself for the already mentioned PITA of changing the sheets/making them. Another off-putting factor is if they're ill in bed.

A HV once told me that children shouldn't sleep in bunk beds until they are 8 year old and over due to the amount of accidents if that helps.

madmarchhare · 22/09/2006 14:03

Ask him to get one of those with a safety guard/rail thing all the way along. Im sure Ive seen them.

madmarchhare · 22/09/2006 14:07

look here

rickman, if it is any comfort to you my two have been in bunkbeds for the last two years (They are nearly seven & 4.5) and we haven't had a single accident & my eldest is a boy too.
How old are your children?

my sister got rid of hers b/c she said whenever the child in the top bunk falls ill it's a PITA.

madmarchhare · 22/09/2006 14:17

god yes, not even 2 yet is deffo too young to be let loose near a bunk bed. My ds who is 3 in december couldnt even be trusted yet as he is one of those 'no fear' types.

How often are they there?, would an air bed be too faffy? or what about one of those cube type chair things that role out into a bed.

Just had another thought. Get one that has ladders that can be removed and make him put it out of reach during the day.

could he get a bed with another pull-out below and high wall cupboards instead?
