How do you do an Easter Egg Hunt?

Dickers · 05/04/2004 14:04

I have 4 kids coming for tea on good friday and I want to do an easter egg hunt...I have a few rather daft questions, as I am an easter egg hunt "virgin"
What are the "rules"?
How do you make it fair (DS 18 months, 1 x 2.3, 1x3.4 and 1 x 5.4)
Where can you eggs to fill.

Please help a novice easter bunny!

We always name the eggs for each child (sticky labels) and hide them anywhere we don't mind kids going- often end up saying getting hotter no colder alot and they know to look for their own and to keep quiet if they find someone else's usually hide two or three smaller creme egg type ones or bags ,(tubs) with smaller type eggs in. Mum has got some fab egg shaped tubs which she has had for years but I have not seen any to buy, if any one knows let me know please

I've done it where they collect those little fluffy yellow chicks instead which are then exchanged for chocolate eggs - everyone gets the same number of eggs then. You can leave the chicks in baskets somewhere "quiet" so they can lay the chocolate eggs if your children are gullible

This gets round several problems which I've had with egg huts in the past:
(1) everyone ends up with the same number of eggs
(2) If it's sunny, the eggs don't melt!
(3) Your children don't find the eggs before the hunt starts and scoff the lot.
(4) You don't waste any chocolate if any chickens are not found. I can't bear the thought of any stray chocolate eggs lurking in my garden!

(5) The chickens are bright yellow and very easy to spot! Great for younger children.

TheCODfather · 05/04/2004 14:17

why cant I type them or from properly ever?

Slinky · 05/04/2004 14:32

I've got some plastic coloured "egg shells" and I usually put some Mini Eggs/Mini Creme eggs etc in them.

We usually share them out at the end - ie 2 for me, 1 for them

Got the eggs from "Birthdays" - £1.99 for 5.

Sonnet · 05/04/2004 14:41

we also share them out at the end - no arguing tghat way..

The chickens are good as you can use them again and again. DSs had lots of chicken hunts last year! They didn't get lots of eggs each time though.

dinosaur · 05/04/2004 14:44

Um - pathetic question here Soupy - but where do you get the chickens from?

Dickers · 05/04/2004 15:13

Thanks Soupy, off to the naff card shop up the road to purchase chickens!

Dickers - thanks for answering my question - so I just need to find a card shop then!

madgirl · 05/04/2004 15:31

dino- think clinton will do it- there's one by leadenhall if that helps?

dinosaur · 05/04/2004 15:41

cool

if that is the word to use about fluffy yellow chicks!

how are you madgirl? I'm going to start popping in to visit you all on the July thread as the August one has gone very quiet - and this baby only has to arrive two days early to qualify!

SoupDragon · 05/04/2004 15:44

I got my chickens from essbee last year!!

dinosaur · 05/04/2004 15:45

I'm sure I should be able to think of a witty reply to that, preferably with a double entendre...but I can't

gothicmama · 06/04/2004 16:05

Cheers Codfather - will have to look at site when dd is in bed.

Clintons have some nice wind up toy chicks as well as traditional yellow ones.

sponge · 06/04/2004 19:40

When we were small my parents used to give us a room each to hunt in to get round the fairness problem

SoupDragon · 06/04/2004 19:47

Poundland in Croydon had packs of 30 little chicks for, unsurprisingly, £1. I also got 20 larger ones for the littlies to hunt for.

madgirl · 06/04/2004 21:02

oops, sorry only just saw your reply to me dino. i've got 3 days left - ta ra!! set up with b/band now for 24 hrs a day mumsnet! come and chat in july soon. we're just doing a roll call (sp?)
