Help me please! Should we get a cat?

SIL has a couple of kittens left. DP really wants one, we visited one yesterday and DS was very good with him. Insurance is cheap, I like cats, would be lovely for DS. On the negative side, someone to look after the cat on hols, my Dm is allergic, but then again we have no carpet so hairs won't be hanging around. Help me please, all along I have been trying to be strong and practical and yet now I am weakening. Should we or shouldn't we?

oh definitely (but then I would say that, wouldn't I...)

Holiday feeding is easy - and there's always the cattery.

Is DM your mum? Depends how allergic she is and how often she visits and for how long.
My DH discovered he is allergic to certain dogs when we house-sat my aunt's cottage (she had taken the dog with her and TBH we didn't know she still had a dog, it didn't smell or look doggy.) He felt so rough in the mornings after sleeping there, we had to go home early.

No DM dosen't live with us, visits every couple of months (or will do hopefully when she is better). Don't fancy two cats just yet - double the trouble! But wouldn't mind seeing how we got on with just the one to begin with. No nos under the circumstances then?!

We got a cat against our will. Hardened child animal-lover made us make a promise long ago that we were held to.

Anyway, it's been fine and I am actually in love with the cat now.

Kittens can be a bit of a pain until they get outside. Can wreck your house a bit. Any furniture or soft furnishings you're attached to?

Will someone be in the house with it for quite a bit of the day when it's little? Once they get past 6 months they're not much trouble. My neighbour feeds and waters it when we're away or it goes to a cattery (only £4/5 a night).

Here you go....NO....
It will cause upset with the neighbours.

bresha · 18/09/2006 17:13

yes, get 2, its much more fun having 2cats than it is one
i let my dd1 name one of them and she felt so good about her self and she told every one how cleaver she was because she gave her cat a name she called him soren lorenson

but be warned having cats especially kittens is hard work but its worth it

Well we have a new kitten! Black with white feet, chest and tummy. We have called her Alice, don't really know why, just seemed the right name! Didn't think it is that odd but my friends look at me oddly when I tell them. Oh well. She has settled in well, using cat litter, seems happy and the only thing she has wrecked (so far) are my net curtains which aren't a great love of mine. Too late for the neighbours SF!

aaah, how sweet, here, kitty, kitty.....

Just to warn you that cat allergicness is not affected one bit by how much you hoover, or whether you have capets, your m will still be sneezing and itching for dear life.

(sorry - I have a well deserved reputation for not being overly fond of cats. I'm sure your kitten is adorable)

Flossam · 22/09/2006 13:24

She'll be fine with a bit of piriton Blu!

Or even better, Neo-Clarytin!
Some of my best friends are cat-owners thanks to Neo-Clarityn.
