House question - are we throwing good money away?

Live in semi detached 1930s style house. Not our 'dream' house by any means but it served a purpose when we moved her 2 years ago (lots of space, nice garden etc).

We want to move within 6-9 months but the windows really need sorting out. Personally I can't stand UPVC but I appreciate that lots of people like the practicality of them. The back windows are all UPVC but the front are still the original wood and they really need replacing. If we were going to stay here then I would definitely pay for wooden double glazed with the original stained glass in but it's really expensive.

Question is - are windows a deal breaker?
do we have to replace them and if so should be just go for UPVC?

i would definitely not put upvc in. i'd patch up the wooden windows. upvc windows are a minus for me. just bought a house and we'll be ripping out the melange of iron, upvc and rotten wooden windows and putting new wooden windows in.

thing is, you always think you won't be there for long, but end up staying much longer than intended. are you sure it's not worth putting in wooden windows and enjoying them for however long you're staying?

As everyone else says, find out what is a selling point in your area. Where I live, UPVC is for some reason highly desirable, especially in old terraces like ours where there are absolutely no original features left in. Most of our street has UPVC, and the original sashes would actually have lowered the value of the house.

Why don't you leave the windows to the new people - just paint the old ones so they look presentable.
