Oooh I'm not really sure 2shoes. I do sometimes talk about the benefits of foods when giving out meals. I do offer what I think is good for the children and try not to get upset if it isn't all eaten. I have tried to point out that variety is the key to health. There is no harm in eating a plate of chips. But it's not a great idea to make it your only meal. Same with fruit. Great for you but not if it's your only food. Find out what your 14yo is proud of doing. Is he/she bright? Is he/she wanting a good figure. Point out the foods that could help them achieve and improve on these things healthily. Do it from a positive viewpoint . Not- eat that and you'll get fat. But more - you've got a lovely clear skin, must be all that water you are drinking. We would give our ds as much information as we could without lecturing and after that it was up to him.
In the years between going off stuff and then liking it again, I can't say that I was too happy with some of his choices. However, something that we said must have gone in because as I say he now eats well and healthily most of the time.
We also have a 13yo ds who has a pretty limited diet and has done for years. It's not that it's particularly unhealthy but it is short on variety.
Again, in recent months we have noticed that he is beginning to try some things that he wouldn't have touched before. So we will encourage that.
We continue to point out to the children what is available to them, make them aware of the different food groups and the benefits to be gained from them. But I don't go on about 'bad' foods and 'good' foods. I do try to make them aware of additives and that most are best to be avoided (not forbidden). We don't always eat meals from the healthy list, we do eat some off the naughty list and enjoy both. I'm going on a bit now and possibly not said it very well and I don't know whether you can pick anything helpful out of it. We didn't really do anything with our ds, he just came around to it himself and made his own choice with the information made available to him.
It sounds like your 14yo is coming around to improving his/her diet and hopefully that will continue now that it's started. With your support I can't see it not doing.
Sorry it took me so long.
