Co-sleeping and night time nappy training. Advice would be fabby

I am lazy! My 4.5 year old still wears a nappy at night. Its usually wet when he wakes up though so feel justified in keeping him in them for now.

He was dry this morning though (woohoo) and was very pleased with himself and has decided that because hes at school he wants to be a 'big' boy' and ditch the nappy.

But, he sleeps in my bed with me, and whilst he is getting the hang of being dry at night I really dont want to get peed on. I also dont want my bed to smell of pee! (after all you never know whos going to be joining me in it ) I dont want to have to do extra washing either, but I suppose thats inevitable!

So, solutions please! I guess my main concern is that I dont want to wake up wet and damp and stinky, and then have to bath me and him and get out the house at 8am for the school run.

I would wait until he's dry most (or nearly every!) morning before ditching the nappies, tbh.

And then, you want to use a mattress protector to keep the mattress from getting wee on it. But I'd leave the nappies on as late as possible, tbh, there's no point in rushing things.

I agree with NQC. Tell him if he is dry for a week (or other period) then he can ditch the nappies. You could maybe use pull ups for a while and say they are nappies for big boys?

Plastic Sheets? Oh my.... could be intresting I suppose (arnt they uncomfortable to sleep on though?)

You were the first person I thought of when starting this thread Franny!

No one thinks 4.5 is too old to be in them then? Phew!

If he still does wees in the night then he is not too old to be wearing them, Tamba! I think night training before a child is ready can be a very stressful and sad thing for them - it is not like they are even conscious at the time when they are weeing.

Here you go Tamba, according to this up to 20% of 5 year olds still wee in their sleep so I would not even start to worry about him being too old.

I agree

Im a very laid back type of mom and usually let them get on with bringing themselves up (in a non-neglectful kinda way )

my dd2 is 5 (& 1 week!) and she is still wet at night , she has refused to wear nappies for ages and i have either sneaked them on her or put her on the potty in the night, we also have a couple of kylies which save the bed.she was dry 2x last week though and has been getting out of bed when it is wet rather than laying in it so its progress!
