Is it very expensive? Messy?

Have seen house with dinky 3rd bedroom but good sized bathroom.

Thanks

Cost would very much depend on where the existing water comes in, where the pipes are etc. If for example the toilet is going to be a long way from the original place there could be a lot of pipe work to link it to the main outlet and a lot of boxing in to hide the pipes etc. Similarly pipes to the basin/bath/shower. The costs all mount up.

Are you going to be keeping your old bathroom suite as that could help keep the costs down?

Our neighbour has just swapped a bedroom and bathroom. It was very messy but, as she lives on her own in a 3 bedded house, she could just shut the door on the 2 rooms affected until it was finished. I think she spent about £2000 but part of that was for new a bathroom suite.

Get a few plumbers to check if its feasible and give you quotes

Thanks BS. Toilet on same side of house. Would need a much smaller bathroom suite so need a new one.

dunno the answer. Is this a dream house then?

Twiglett · 17/09/2006 19:07

I haven't done it but our house has a bathroom in what was previously a rather large bedroom and it is fabulous

we have an armchair in there, huge bath and still loads of floor space

Tinker · 18/09/2006 13:03

Well, not sure "dream house" but we like it.

Well, big bathroom and big 3rd bedroom would be ideal.

Tinker - we were thinking of swapping our bathroom (big, Victorian, easily double bedroom sized) with ds2's bedroom (tiny cell-like room). Got a quote from someone who was fitting our boiler at the time and he reckoned on about £800. The bathroom and bedroom were next door to each other - same side of the house, so not much re-jigging. We haven't had it done (I was going to go ahead but dp is more... cautious!), but I can definitely see the advantage and if you could somehow get it done before you moved in that would be perfect.

Any room to do a 1st floor extension on stilts iyswim and extend one side of the house that way? Either a carport or just covered path at the side or a New Orleans-style overhang and porch on the front or back?

zippy539 · 18/09/2006 13:55

Ooooh. Good thread. We're thinking of doing the same thing with the house we've just bought - moving the bathroom into a big internal box room and turning current bathroom into a small bedroom. Don't have any info on how much it's going to cost though.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 18/09/2006 14:28

Re upheaval, swapping them over wouldn't really be much more hassle than replacing or reorganising a suite. Only a couple of days and you can bath carefully while waiting for tiling etc.

chipkid · 18/09/2006 14:36

we are having our house renovated at present-donot underestimate the level of disruption-even for a relatively small job. We are living out at the minute-as we could not live through the level of work being done. The filth is unbelievable. Plus buildres and plumbers make a bloody mess everywhere even when the work is confined!
If you can put up with it-I am all for making your living accommodation better!

Thanks all. Hadn't thought of a 1st floor only extension...
