What can I send my 'sponsored' child in Kenya as a birthday present?

We've been sponsoring a little girl (and her community) in Kenya for the last year. It's her birthday soon and I want to send a little soemthing, but what is appropriate?

Simple, non-flashy, easily mailed are the key requirements.

Anyone any experience or suggestions?

How old is she?

What about some sort of little doll - maybe a clothespeg type doll or tiny ragdoll?

How about a girly glittery t-shirt?

something for her hair?

stationery, pens, paper etc, paints? glue sticks??? that sort of thing?

She's nearly 7. They really are a very poor community. I worry that something glittery/ girlie will just look crass in her village. I thought hair stuff, but looking at her picture she hasn't got any!

Wondered about a plastic bracelet or stuff like that?

Go into Clares Accessories and see if you can get a nice sparkly bangle or similar?

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 15/09/2006 16:51

I'd go for something like stationery, books, colouring stuff etc - things like bangles adn the like she'll probably get fairly easily as it's very common to make them within poorer communities, some will get sold, the "not quite so good" ones (but usually still gorgeous) will be kept for themselves. Books staionery etc will be much harder to get hold of and much more of a 'treat'. IYKWIM

How about a set of pencils with her name on them. I forget the name of the company, but one of the mumsnet advertisers does them. I ordered them one year for my stepkids and they were a big hit.

I would get a special colouring book and smart set of pencils. Is it through Plan? They have quite a good catalogue of things to send and suggest t-shirts, colouring and some more traditional style toys such as footballs.

You can get lovely notepads and stationary from The Range.

If she were a bit older I would suggest a wind up radio

But I think colouring/writing supplies might be nice
