Does it really matter how you load the dishwasher?

Hi, in the big scale of things I guess it really doesn't but I went back to work today for the 1st time after having dd3 & was really stressed out at the way my dh had loaded the dishwasher!!
Am I just a sad person or does it get to you too???

I have to reload it after mine has done it

He puts wood in, and nests spoons, and doesn't scrape bits off, and puts things on top of/touching other things, and plastic in the bottom, and and and and and.

We are not sad, just sensible, and hygienic!

tissy · 14/09/2006 20:34

you're as sad as my dh!

he reopens the dishwasher after I have loaded and started it to check whether I've done it correctly.

He sees it as some kind of challenge to his masculinity to get as much as posssible in there. I think things get cleaner if the water has a bit of space to move around, so have been known to hand-wash a few odds and ends rather than spending time trying to sqeeze them in!

Does matter if cups go wrong way up, bowls sit inside one another, woodenspoons in basket too tall and stop the sprayers turning and light weight plastic things in bottom ready to get wedged in the sprayers. Arghhh!

MrsSpoon · 14/09/2006 22:44

Yes it does matter, if DH has filled the dishwasher I generally have a look before it is too far into it's cycle as he always does it wrong. I just can't bear the thought that by moving a couple of items round I'll get a better standard of wash and usually manage to fit in the dishes he has left on the worktop.

notasheep · 14/09/2006 22:46

Dont have that worry, dont have a dishwasher

geekgrrl · 14/09/2006 22:47

oh yes - this has been the source of many arguments between dh (dishwasher perfectionist) and my parents (crap). they're banned from loading it at our house, so completely understand the severity of your distress!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 14/09/2006 22:47

DH always puts the knives with the blade up as they wash better. I insist on putting them blade down so we don't get hurt accidentally. He did it again - and I got a little cut. I think he's learnt the lesson now.

My DH is from the 'cram in as much as you can' school of loading. Followed by the 'this dishwasher's cr*p,it doesn't wash properly' school of unloading. Painful to witness on a daily basis. BTW we put everything in, including wooden spoons.

Fortunately dh calls the dishwasher a devil mchine and won't go near it, so I can load it PROPERLY!!!

WishICouldGiveUpWork · 14/09/2006 23:07

So quick poll-blades up or blades down?

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 14/09/2006 23:08

Yes it does. If he can't fit everything in, he has to wash up what's left.
Incidentally a one-off limescale treatment makes a big difference to efficiency so cramming isn't inefficient as long as everything's the right way up.

SoMuchToBits · 14/09/2006 23:08

Down

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 14/09/2006 23:09

Down. I know it spreads them out better up, but I also know I'd stab myself every day!

notasheep · 14/09/2006 23:11

sound of snoring

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 14/09/2006 23:14

Yeah down, that's what I meant LOL.
I also load knives downwards although found my old MFI ownbrand dishwasher basket couldn't take the stress. New Bosch one is uber strong .

Skribble · 14/09/2006 23:17

DOWn down down please!!!!

Neighbour sliced her wrist open, knife was pointing up and the angle she looked down at she didn't see it.

SoMuchToBits · 14/09/2006 23:24

I love Mr Bosch the dishwasher!!

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 14/09/2006 23:24

You mean Herr Bosch?

dazzlincaz · 14/09/2006 23:26

Read report in a newspaper of someone who died ( a child, I think) when he stumbled over the open dishwasher and fell onto an upright knife blade. After reading that, I don't care whether they wash better up, it is DOWNWARDS they go anytime I load it. The Bosch we have has a new style basket with a grid thing on the top, so cutlery doesn't stick together.
