Kitchen Worktops - Where to get a good deal ?

DH has decided as a surprise for MIL's birthday he wants to re-vamp her kitchen for her birthday while she is on holiday in the next 2 weeks.

We know exactly what she wants, she talks about it constantly how much she would love to change her kitchen just can't afford it (widowed, one income, crap job etc) so we thought it would be nice to do this and cheer her up.
Thinking along the lines of new work tops, new tiles and a few accessory bits but where is the best place to get a good deal on work tops ?
Have got prices from Homesbase, B&Q and Magnets, is there anywhere else I can try ?

We found Ikea to be loads cheaper than anywhere else, but this was for solid wooden worktops. I'm not sure how their prices would compare for formica, if that's what you're after (I'm thinking, if it were my MIL she'd be saying, ooh I don't want wood... sooo impractical). Anyway, if there's an Ikea anywhere near you they're deffo worth checking out as there kitchens generally are fab and v bargainatious.

Lovely idea for MIL, btw.

Have looked on the Ikea website which is absoutely crap. Will suggest to DH about popping there at the weekend.

TBH I am not impressed with the Ikea website, but would say it's definitely worth a look into a store. We got our 'butchers block' style worktop from there and I love it IIRC there is quite a bit of choice.

Let us know hoe you get on, it's so thoughtful of you and your DH to do this

Piffle · 14/09/2006 12:11

yep you have download the kitchen designer to get a good idea of how great the kitchens are
I've got a space o7 new catalogue, would you like me to post it to you?

Piffle · 14/09/2006 12:11

spare not space

Ah thanks Piffle that is very kind, have just spoken to DH and we are going to go there this afternoon, he is skiving off early.

I love butchers block, would be my choice definitely. MIL has dark oak cupboards though so am thinking glass black work tops with either cream or charcoal tiles and all cream accessories, tea/coffee/sugar pots etc

Have you tried Howdens? They are the trade arm of MFI and are much cheaper, but sell the same products. My bro bought a kitchen there recently. If you get one of their top of the range ones they're supposed to be very good. (According to my brother's builder....)

2 friends have had problems with IKEA kitchens and my brothers builder said they're "Style and no substance".
