Am I being over sensitive?

My DH was away working yesterday via London. We live in a small town and have 2 children.
When he got home he was telling me how buzzing the night life seemed and that he felt really old,he is 45.he said i thought for one moment what it would be like to be single again.
He then went on to say "your a style guru, did you know hot pants were back in fashion again"
Apparently so he says he was on the tube and all these women were getting on wearing hotpants. He then joked and said I went round the circle line 3 times just to make sure they were'nt wearing mini skirts and they were in fact hot pants.
He said he missed out the first time round in the 60's.

Now I have just turned 40,had a stressful week last week with the children and he was working on a sunday so by this time 11pm I was feeling quite low.am I being over sensitive or is this just how the men think.DH says I have had a sense of humour bypass but I just found it a bit out of charecter and a bit pervy to be honest.
have I lost my sense of humour?

Meant to add i just feel really upset and have this image of my DH ooggling these women on the tube and wonders if this is what he does all the time.Is it an age thing.
I have always trusted him in the 14 years we have been together but since having children feel old, frumpy and this did'nt help.
why did he have to tell me that?
Or is that we ahve a trusting relationship that he feels he can say things like that to me?

Dear bat,

I'm sure he really didn't mean to upset/annoy, men can be really insensitive like that. My dh said something recenlty and I brooded about it for days.

Don't be like me - he doesn't think you are frumpy or old or he would never have mentioned the girls/shorts. He was just joking, although it was a tad ham-fisted.

And I am sure he wasn't ogling all the women per se; a bunch of loud, noisy leery half-naked ones probably got on, shrieking as they do - the whole carriage must have noticed them!

Mabe it is time to start mentioning how gorgeous some of the chaps on the telly are - Sawyer and Jack from 'Lost' perhaps, Jack Bauer from 24 or or the guys from 'Nip&Tuck'. Hee hee hee

cooperflykiller-i am sure you ae right.just feelinf a bit insercure at the moment.

Had a really stressful week last week and things are getting on top of me.then he had to work on Sunday so was struggling with the children alone.

Did say to him how would he feel if I started pointing out men in tight cycling shorts and I am sure from knowing him he would take offence.

have to say BOH that it sounds like he felt he could say it to you, which indicates that he feels there is trust between you.
perhaps he could have expressed it a bit differently, I bet he wasn't really sitting there with his tongue hanging out, especially as he said he felt really old, it's not like he was trying to chat someone up.
I think in your shoes I would give him the benefit of the doubt, but if it happened again I would say something or ask him what he expected me to make of his remarks.

throckenholt · 11/09/2006 13:49

sounds like he was just exaggerating to make it funny - more a comment on him feeling out od place i think rather than anything else.

It was just unfortunate timing if it made you feel bad.

Tell him you are sorry your sense of humour went AWOL yesterday after a hard day, and then forget about it.

TheVoiceOfReasonQV · 11/09/2006 13:51

Agree, (again) with Throckenholt.

Men can be pillocks - DH & I were talking about the X-Men. He asked if I could be any X-Man, who would I be.
"I think I'd like to be Mystique because..." I began
"So you could have a figure like that?" he said
STONE COLD SILENCE....TUMBLEWEED BLOWS ACROSS LIVING ROOM....SOUND OF A BELL TOLLING IN THE DISTANCE

batoutofhell · 11/09/2006 14:02

Thanks everyone,just me being silly.

Maybe I should buy a pair of hot pants and surprise him one evening.

I agree with everyone else I'm afraid, I think he sounds like a nice chap but we are women and women often read things from what men say that simply aren't there, especially when we're feeling overwhelmed in general.
See if you can think of something fun for the both of you to do together this week and you'll get the attention we all need from time to time. (But don't expect him to organise anything spontaneous, he's a man .) Sounds naff but a bottle of wine, some old CDs and a pack of cards has proved a great bonding session for me and my DH from time to time.

CheesyFeet · 11/09/2006 15:41

Sounds like he touched a nerve because of how you feel about yourself. He probably didn't realise how it made you feel. He was talking to you like he would probably talk to his mates down t' pub, no harm meant.

My dh says stuff like this all the time. On the whole I just laugh it off but there are occasions (generally pmt related) when I have a sense of humour failure.

Do you think that this sort of comment would upset you at any time or is it just because of the timing, ie after you having a long week, a crap day and feeling generally low?

Do you ever look at a bloke (irl or on tv or whatever) and think, yummy? Do you ever look back on your single life and think, "wouldn't it be nice if...." I know I do, although I wouldn't swap dh and dd for anything. For instance, we were on holiday last week and I would have loved to have gone out on the lash but I couldn't as we have a 2 year old. It doesn't mean I don't love or fancy dh.

Hope you're feeling a bit better soon.

Twiglett · 11/09/2006 15:43

yes you are being oversensitive

robin3 · 11/09/2006 15:48

I know how he feels...obviously not the hotpants bit but when I go in to London for a meeting I reminise about the old single days and notice all the trends etc.

I think it's nice that he can have a laugh with you about ogling the hotpants...shows you're great friends as well as marrieds! Time to worry is when he doesn't share his honest thoughts IMO.

I don't blame you for being sensitive though....some days I'd have responded exactly the same way.
