Nappy changing etiquette

I hate to say it but I find lots of fellow mums are quite disgusting in how they change nappies in public places will little disregard for how it might make other people gag.
I think No 2s should be attended to well away from other people, not at a restaurant table or by the side of swimming pool! (I know there are not always changing tables - but for goodness sake!)
The other day I was in a playground on a bench by a bin and a mother from some distance, lobbed a nappy into the bin. It wasn't folded into a tight ball but all open and pissy. When I was a nappy-changer, I d have fastened it up and shoved discretely shoved to the bottom of the bin. I went "yuk!" involuntarily as it sailed by my face and she went nuts at me.
I m sorry, your own child's poos and wees are not stomach-churning, but other people's are!

Oh goodness, I wouldn't change kids (particularly poopy ones) near where people were eating, but otherwise, you do what you have to.

tassis · 11/09/2006 11:26

I agree. Hate stinky nappies.

Also dislike people putting dirty nappies in my kitchen bin (wet ones I can deal with). I want them in the outside bin, and don't mind if they get dumped at the back door to be taken out by the next person that goes!!

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:27

its poo, so what?

TheDullWitch · 11/09/2006 11:29

It stinks, it s disgusting.

im with misdee - doesnt bother me in the slightest.

Bodily functions need tended to regardless.

Tutter · 11/09/2006 11:30

ah come on misdee, it's not particularly nice stuff is it?

i'm lucky in that ds is a very predictable poo-er (after breakfast and tea) so am not often out and about for dirty nappy changes, but if i were i'd try to find somewhere away from other people. and i'm very careful about making a tight ball of the nappy and using nappy sacks. would expect others to do the same. was alarmed at one of my NCT friends who often left her ds's on my ds's changing table.

Flamesparrow · 11/09/2006 11:31

Doesn't bother me either - although at eating places I prefer it to be done elsewhere... I have seen a dad changing a nappy on a sofa in a coffee place in protest though as there was no changing area

NotQuiteCockney · 11/09/2006 11:31

I don't use other people's indoor bins (or my indoor bins) for poopy nappies, as the smell does hang about. But otherwise, well, you do what you have to, particularly if you're wrangling more than one kid, you can't always flee to somewhere separate to sort out a poopy bottom.

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:31

i once went into the baby changing room to change dd2 bum, the unit had been pulled off the wall and all the toilets were flooded. i changed her on a bench by the side of the table in macdonalds. it was really pooey as well.

Iklboo · 11/09/2006 11:31

I def wouldn't chuck an open nappy into the bin. I wrap it all round itself & put it in a nappy sack. Agree sometimes you have no choice about where you change LO - I mean, how would you like to sit in poo-ey knickers? But I'd certainly try and be discreet about it though

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 11/09/2006 11:32

if my child needs changed and there is no facilities available, then i have every right to change her.

poo is poo - everyone does it.

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:32

sorry, am cloth nappy user, so nappies always go into waterproof bag and home with me.

TheDullWitch · 11/09/2006 11:33

The right to do exactly what you want in public regardless of other people s feelings or sensitivities - that is so Talk To The Hand.

agree that pooey nappies deserve to go immediately out of the house into the dustbin.

especially when you have underfloor heating. when the nct babies were newborn there'd often be a binful (in the kitchen - everyone just lobbed them in there) (apart from the mum who'd leave them on the changing table ) when everyone went home - you can imagine the honk as the bin slowly warmed to release the aromas.... mmm....

JessaJam · 11/09/2006 11:36

I am fairly free and easy about changing nappies...outside in a park no problem, on back seat of a car in a car park, it needs doing when it needs doing. If there is no changing room I quite merrily plonk ds on his travel chnaging mat in the ladies. I do wrap the nappy up as well as I can and would put it in the bin rather than throw it ( but my throwing skills are pretty sh*te!). Wouldn't change nappy near people eating etc out of general politeness and some hygeine awareness!

And, some of ds's craps are fairly stomach churning!

Iklboo · 11/09/2006 11:37

Thing is.....you could be doing something that offends somebody's sensitivities without realising it.............(not referring to poo-ey bum baby)
[devil's advocate emoticon]

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:38

yes just going out with my dh makes people recoil in disgust

i mean, you can see his blood, that must put people off their food PMSL!!

Tutter · 11/09/2006 11:39

hmmm, not sure it's the same thing though misdee?

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:40

but its blooooooooooooooood [evil cackle]

seriously, one woman looked like she was about to puke as bshe saw his blood.

made me laugh anyway.

Tutter · 11/09/2006 11:40

my brother gets the same when he injects (diabetic).

but anyway, back to poo...

misdee · 11/09/2006 11:42

poo pooo pooo.

better in a nappy than on the floor IMO

SoupDragon · 11/09/2006 11:42

I wouldn't change one where people were eating - common courtesy.

I would dispose of them considerately. At home I tell other people to leave them outside the front door and they then get shoved in the dustbin. I certainly wouldn't throw them into a bi from a distance past someone else. Although we did have a fun game of Nappy Basketball in the villa on holiday but that was in private (I won)

Other than that, I would change them wherever necessary. I don't find other children's poos & wees stomach churning - no more or less than my own child's. They're little children. It has to be done.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/09/2006 11:43

oh no! Not another "nappies in public" thread!!!1

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I get far more offended by people smoking close by - especially in a restaurant. It smells worse, it permeates your clothes and your hair. Oh, and it's bad for your health.

SoupDragon · 11/09/2006 11:43

Walking about with your blood showing however is just plain inconsiderate
