What to say to colleague who has cancer?

I found out over the weekend that one of my line managers has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I work part-time and the rest of the staff were told in a whole-staff meeting on Friday. It's been caught quickly, the prognosis is fairly good but it's been a huge shock for her. She's going to continue at work until ger treatment starts so I will see her tomorrow.

I get on well with her, we're not particularly close as such but she's a nice lady. I don't want to not say anything but I also don't want to put her on the spot if I approach her first thing to speak to her. But I also would like to pass on my best to her. Would a handwritten note be better than going up to her in person in case she's feeling a bit 'wobbly'?

how about an e-mail? or is that a bit impersonal.

she doesn't always check her mails so i might see her before she sees the email. would prefer handwritten note anyway which i could put in her tray first thing. the trays get checked regularly

I would leave a card on her desk, saying you've heard her diagnosis and appreciate that although she's still as capable of doing her job as before, if she ever feels the need to offload some, you're there.

You could send a "thinking of you" card - and tell her if there's anything you can do for her, to let you know - maybe a small bunch of flowers?
