I got an email - looking very official - telling me that someone tried to hack into my eBay ID and therefore I had to return all my details the "official" form to stop my ID being suspended.
The email looked kosha - all the right logos etc ....

They wanted email address ( and password )
eBay ID ( and Password )
my address details

Luckily my postman told me about a similar scam - where a lady ended up being charged $250,000 becuase something like this has happened.

What should I do - I have alerted ebay and that's about it ...

has anyone else come across this ??

Thanks

Definitely a hoax. Ebay will never ask for your password.

M2T · 30/03/2004 12:01

Whoa sounds dodgy! you're right to let EBay know about it. Don't really think there is anything else you CAN do. As far as I know it's not illegal. Good job you were clued up.

CookieMonster · 30/03/2004 12:01

No I haven't come across this, but I'm sure that a large reputable site like Ebay would never ask you to send your passwords in an e-mail. I think you've done the right thing in alerting Ebay and ignoring the request.

my dh also got this email. they also asked him for his paypal account details. he just emailed ebay and let them know. never never give out passwords.

There are a number of hoaxes like this doing the rounds. Scammers are targetting most of the high street banks, as well as Ebay and Paypal. Never give this information in an email and never click on any links provided in such an email as they will take you to an authentic looking site and get your details when you enter them. Any bogus, or potentially bogus, emails should be forwarded to Ebay (spoof AT ebay.co.uk). If you need to check your details, type in the URL yourself rather than clicking on a link.

My brother also had the same email. I think he has also notified ebay.

Hiya Crystaltips,

I get on average 1 of these a day asking for all sort of information.

EVERY e-mail I get from e-bay I now send to [email protected], ebay will then send you an e-mail telling you whether it is a spoof or not.

GillW · 30/03/2004 13:17

These are usually easy to spot because the "link" they ask you to click on will not actually be the same as the wording in the text.

You can see a whole laod of examples here .

kiwisbird · 30/03/2004 20:39

send every email ebay send you to [email protected]
they get back to you very quickly and tell you yes or no... I get about 3 a day at the moment, they are bloody annoying!

sammac · 30/03/2004 20:55

I got one today from paypal wanting my bank account details and my pin number!!!! yeah right- I never respond to these either and just bump them off to ebay, but some look good, others have poor grammer or spelling.

juniper68 · 31/03/2004 11:37

same thing happened to me and i got one for paypal too. I just alerted them to it though.

misdee · 31/03/2004 20:54

spoof emails start with dear ebay/paypal member. real ones have your name. that helps weeding out the spoof one from the real ones.
