For several months awhile back we were plagued by nuisance calls from people with Asian accents who claimed to know that someone at our phone number had had a car accident in the last two years. Now, it seems someone is taking a more professional approach. I just got a computerized call from a machine speaking in a female voice with a cheery, American accent saying that it was phoning from the Nationwide Advice Bureau and claiming to have the same information about my accident history. In the past I used to point out to the human beings that I don't have a car in which to have been involved in this phantom accident. This time I just told the machine to f* off and hung up. Just wanted to alert others to this more professional-sounding approach. I have read about phishing scams of this kind and also equally dodgy "businesses" that just try to get you to make fraudulent insurance claims and take a fee or something. It must be a scam or something like that, right?
