yes can be used over here - I think you can use it for 1yr then you have to 'swap' if for a UK one (no test needed) - if you want your Zim one back you just send the UK one back and you get your Zim one.

so if they've already been here 12 months they'll need to exchange it for a UK one now.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2006 00:37

no you swap it for a UK one - DH got some long hard stares at his at road blocks in Zim on holiday - don't think some of the cops had ever seen one LOL.

misdee · 09/09/2006 00:37

she has been here over 12months

OP posts:
misdee · 09/09/2006 00:38

so if she has now sent it off, she should be driving till she gets her new liscence?

OP posts:
misdee · 09/09/2006 00:38

shouldnt

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2006 00:39

not sure on that last one - but I'd say probably not if she's been over here more than 12 months.

misdee · 09/09/2006 00:41

Hi misdee. No expert in this field but thought I would let you know that when we lived in the UK dh exchanged his aussie liscence for a UK one and had been in the country for well over 12mths. Pretty sure he was still ok to drive and he did.

misdee · 09/09/2006 00:52

she didnt exchange it for uk liscence. was in court a fortnight ago about it. is still driving.

Also when I had my UK licence I got a speeding fine while my licence was away at the DVLA having the address changed. Just sent a letter back with the form I received saying I would forward licence on when received from DVLA. Hope this helps

humpydumpy · 09/09/2006 00:54

Would propably get on the phone to the DVLA for advise

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2006 00:55

according to that website that SS linked too - for Australian and Zimbabwean licence holders

"# you can drive in Great Britain (GB) on your full, valid driving licence from Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man or a Designated Country for up to 12 months from the day you become resident in GB

you can exchange your licence for a British one within five years of becoming resident

if you haven't exchanged your licence for a British one before the end of the first 12 months of becoming resident, you will need to stop driving"

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2006 00:56

(oh and that information is from the DVLA website)

humpydumpy · 09/09/2006 00:56

Whoops. Good job dh didn't get pulled over.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 09/09/2006 00:58

sure is HD!!!

humpydumpy · 09/09/2006 01:02

Now have the opposite problem, as we have moved to oz and he should have changed it back after 3mths. Have now been here 9mths. Better check he is ok to drive.

Had this query with my Swiss one (non EU). Could drive on it legally for only a year after entering the country but had up to 5 to do a straight swap. So, if same rules apply, theoretically she can still send it off but she can't drive until new one arrives. However because I'd passed my test in UK and my original licence hadn't been cancelled I could just get a duplicate of my previous UK one (updated to become a photocard).
