Am contemplating buying a set of hair clippers and attempting to DIY-cut ds1 and ds2's hair. I hate taking them to the barbers, and how hard can it be ?

Words of advice/warning please!

It's dead easy. My DS loves an all over no7, with a little trim with scissors around the bottom. It feels lovely. He does tend to squirm and giggle a bit as it is very tickly.

smellymelly · 29/03/2004 09:50

Gave DS his first hair cut at 5 months, (!)now he's 4 and at the moment has a No.3 all over. If he has it longer then I just trim his edges round his ears. I do DP's as well.

Took him to hairdresser once, and it was a nightmare, they are so much more comfortable at home.

I've got one of those 'hairbibs' from Kleeneze I think, to catch the hair.

Just be aware that the clippers are quite noisy, so that will be the scary thing, but maybe you can sit them in front of the tv, and bribe them with sweets or whatever.

Use quite a long cut first, otherwise you may have a shock!!!!

I will be cutting DD's hair myself too when it is too long, but not with the clippers!!

PipBeckett · 29/03/2004 09:51

I cut my ds1's hair with clippers because he's so aggressive and hates having it done. I couldn't inflict that on a poor unsuspecting barber. I also cut dh's hair with them and my dad and the FIL. There's nothing to it. Just make sure you get a pair of clippers that someone recommends. I know quite a few people who've bought ones that pluck rather than cut.

smellymelly - beeen looking for ages for one of those hairbibs! is it the one that makes the cutee look ridiculous... can't think of any other way to describe it really!... do you know where i could get one from? - except kleeneeze - or can you get them online?

thanks

sorry for the slight hi-jack...

Hulababy · 29/03/2004 09:55

Good luck I would just not be able to do DDD's at all. DD goes to hairdressers with MIL for hers done. Costs £2.50 every 6-8 weeks at the moment. It always looks lovely when they have done it - if I tried it'd be terrible

smellymelly · 29/03/2004 10:02

Hi Bea,

Sorry only seen them in Kleeneze, and yes my ds looks ridiculous in it, I make Dp wear it too !!!

I have looked at the instructions but there are no company details at all.

It is called a 'hair cutting bib', so maybe you could do a search on the internet for that, and it is yellow if that helps....

I am the world's worst at cutting hair but even I can manage it with clippers! Have even managed some rather complex creations involving different length settings in attempt to achieve ds' wrestler du jour style.

Get Wahl clippers, they're the best.

toddlerbob · 29/03/2004 10:07

Just done ds's with the Remington Winnie the Pooh haircut set which was a present. His hair has gone from mad looking to tidy with curls. It's not as good as the hairdresser, but presentable.

MrsDoolittle · 29/03/2004 10:09

James Nesbitt does!!

emmatmg · 29/03/2004 10:10

Yep, DS1 DS2 and Dh's, will do DS3 when he eventually get hair

WARNING= Do NOT buy Nicky Clarke clippers with ceramic cutting blade. They are Shite!!!!!

Tetley · 29/03/2004 10:31

Yes - I do dh's and both ds's. I think our clippers are Remington ones - they've been fine.
Both ds's get a grade 6 (with a bit of grade 4 around the back, if they're still sitting still!). Ds2 is only 18 months old, but he's always been fine - you just have to be quick!

happy1 · 29/03/2004 10:37

I cut ds hair, I do dp's first so then ds thinks he's just like Daddy!

Heavens, no. After one attempt at cutting DS's fringe (let's just call it wonky monk style) I decided it was best left to the professionals. The children's hairdresser I used last time played a video, which kept DS completely absorbed and still.

lydialemon · 29/03/2004 12:21

Yes, I do DH's and then DS's (6 and 3). Not sure what I'm going to do when DD's hair gets long though, as I think an 'action man' cut on her might be a bit severe.

I have Remington cordless clippers which I find a lot easier (and quicker!) to use that being hampered with a mains lead.

I learnt my one haircut from watching SIL (ex hairdresser) cutting DHs hair for years before I 'took over'.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2004 12:41

Its easy peasy. Even I can do it without makig a complete has of it! The clippers I've got aren't noisey at all. I think they're Remington "no need to oil" ones.

collision · 29/03/2004 12:58

Wouldnt dare do it. In fact ds had a hair cut last week and I had to put him in a headlock to get it finished!!

My experience of trying to cut dh's hair put me off for life as I cut a HUGE wedge out of the side of his head and had to sweep some of the longer bits over it to disguise it !! (It sounds like a comb-over but it wasnt.....honest!)

geekgrrl · 29/03/2004 13:13

I cut my dds' hair - it looks ok I'd say and I just can't face shelling out 5 quid + going to the hairdresser's in the first place. Dh always cuts his own hair with clippers (I do the neck but he does the rest) - he's very particular and hairdressers don't seem to get it right or something....of course he seems to only do it just after I have thoroughly cleaned the bathroom and the hair gets everywhere.

Pennypocket · 29/03/2004 13:36

DP cuts DS's hair with clippers whenever he does his. DS loves being a big boy with his daddy though he always ends up creased on the floor with laughter as it tickles him so much!

lou33 · 29/03/2004 14:06

I do all four kids and dh's.

noddy5 · 29/03/2004 14:07

yes and my ds has been looking like liam gallagher now for 9 years

suedonim · 29/03/2004 15:04

I've done it twice, once to ds1 and once to dd1. Ds1 had to go to the hairdressers afterwards, to have my mistakes put right, and I managed to cut the skin on dd's neck while doing hers. I've learnt my lesson now.

Bugsy2 · 30/03/2004 11:17

I cut both of mine. Clippers & scissors for ds who is now 4.5yrs old and scissors for a bob on dd, who is nearly two.
I think it is very easy with clippers, just start with the longest attachment.
Friends have asked me to do their children, so I like to think I'm not too bad!
