Conservatories/extensions and manhole cover

We're thinking about extending our kitchen along the side - it would probably be like a conservatory. The only problem is that there is a manhole cover in this part of the garden.

I've been told that it is tricky and expensive to move them. I was then looking at a site about conservatories which said that they can be left and that you can cover them with flooring - but that obviously it is important to ensure that they can be accessed. I'm just wondering if anyone's done this and what type of flooring they used?

Thanks

WE threw a small rug over the sewer/manhole cover in our conservatory.

Mine's in the middle of the kitchen floor - tiled with the same tiles as the rest of the floor - not tooooo hideous.

We've recently had some plans drawn for a conservatory/sunroom extension. The builder has talked about doing away with the manhole altogether and having a 'rodding point' (??) on the soil stack. Could be an option for you?

You can get a special 'lid' which fits over the manhole cover. You then tile inside it with the same tiles as the rest of your floor. It dies have metal 'holes' at each corner, so it can be lifted if necessary. I think it depends on where it will be in the new room. We had one in the back garden, which was had the metal top filled with the same flags as the patio, and where about to have one in the utility (extended over the pation).
