Hourly rate for a cleaner?

I'm looking to organise a cleaner to help out my best friend for a few weeks once her baby arrives. I'm not in the UK to do any of the practical stuff that I'd like to do to help out and thought this might do instead. I'll probably use an agency just to stay on the safe side of insurance and police clearances etc. but wanted to get an idea of the average hourly rate people are paying so that we don't get fleeced. Thanks for your help!

I do it for Age concern and the going rate is 8p/h

magnolia1 · 31/08/2006 17:10

But thats probably because I have an enhanced crb etc....

pay our cleaner £6/hour, that's in w London
what a lovely gesture!

lemonaid · 31/08/2006 17:16

(gulp) we pay £10.50 per hour through an agency. But [struggles for justification] it's a very good agency about which I'd heard loads of good things, and we'd had some very bad experiences with other agencies before so my priority was getting someone who would actually do the work properly without being chased up all the time.

They are about to have to VAT register though so the prices will go up by 17.5% which I think may be a step too far for us. I hate the thought of having to find someone else though.

£7.50 p.h.

TheBlonde · 31/08/2006 17:18

I pay 7.25 in SW London and I think it's probably on the cheaper side as I've had my cleaner for 4 years

SherlockLGJ · 31/08/2006 17:19

I pay mine 7.50, I am in Surrey.

lemonaid · 31/08/2006 17:20

In SW London, btw.

blueshoes · 31/08/2006 18:26

7.50 p/h, in SE London. Not agency

donnie · 31/08/2006 18:27

£7.50 per hour, I am also in London, no agency.

MarsLady · 31/08/2006 18:27

£7p/h N London.

Bellie · 31/08/2006 18:29

I pay 9 per hour in surrey.

Albert · 31/08/2006 18:29

OMG
I'm in Brazil, not much help but an interesting comparison - I pay my cleaner about £12 for a 10 hour day!! And this is a good rate for here!!

MarsLady · 31/08/2006 18:30

So Albert..... do you think she'll travel?

SherlockLGJ · 31/08/2006 18:32

Mars

YOu beat me to it.

Twiglett · 31/08/2006 18:32

£7.11 per hour .. agency gets £2.11 of it

you may find it difficult to arrange as most cleaners expect cash at the job and agency fees are separate

but best of luck ... fab idea

Albert · 31/08/2006 18:34

Well, I must admit I do pay her fares (a grand total of £1.20 per day) so if you pay her fare I'm sure she'd love to come and clean for you!

MarsLady · 31/08/2006 18:37

Sure.....gulp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

littlemadam · 31/08/2006 18:51

Paid last one £10 ph, infill agency £11 ph, and new one is £7 ph, which seems about right looking at all you peeps, but the general rate round us is £10 - when you can get one !!! We are near Leeds.

lemonaid · 31/08/2006 18:51

One perk of our agency [still struggling to justify cost] is that we pay agency and they pay the cleaner, so no need to worry about cash for the cleaner each week.

Loshad · 31/08/2006 19:04

really kind idea. i pay mu cleaner £6 ph, just outside Leeds, we've paid more than double that via agency though.

wartywarthog · 31/08/2006 19:26

mine charges £8 ph.

hana · 31/08/2006 21:46

am switching to agency ( with higher rates) for a few reasons in a few weeks - will go up buy about £5 gulp!!
