I would call NHS direct to be on the safe side. They are not sharp so he should be fine but do check anyway.
Let us know what they say

xx

If he hasn't choked he'll be fine!!

It will just come out in his poo - lovely!

Seems a bit OTT to me - but better to be safe than sorry I guess!

My DS also 3 reguarly swallows olive stones by accident - maybe I should be a bit more careful!

Let us know how you get on.

Did this when I was small. It reappeared about 24 hours later!!! Hopefully your little Twig's will too.

Twiglett, we had a similar thing at the weekend - ds swallowed a 5p coin. Phoned NHS direct and they said to take him in so dh went with him. I then looked up swallowing stuff on the internet (bad idea) and basically even if they are not choking, the object can still be lodged in windpipe or stuck at entrance to stomach. So you did the right thing. Ds was fine too.

I think you did the right thing in taking him, Twigeltt, plum stones do have slightly sharp ends, don't they? But as you say, without a scan, how could they tell?
If it doesn't re-appear promptly, I think I'd request a scan.Bet you had a really tedious afternoon - poor you!

wilbur · 24/03/2004 18:44

Yes, he had an x-ray and then they asked him to be part of a study to see if they could locate it using a metal detector. They only x-ray the throat and top of stomach but it wasn't there so already had passed on down. I don't think the metal detector could find it either, but ds was very defintie about swallowing it. Maybe they are more concerned about coins and that kind of thing.

dd2 swallowed a 1p coin when she was 2 - called NHS direct, they advised us to go to A&E, in case it was lodged anywhere. Dh took her (it was that or clear up the sick! ), and they x-rayed her stomach - she still remembers being able to see the "circle in her tummy". It eventually came out 3 days later. What fun we had searched through every nappy in the interim.

I mean "what fun we had searchING through every nappy in the interim"

Twiglett - so glad to here he is ok. I must admit to feeling very guilty that I had given you crap advice and worrying that something could have gone wrong

Anyway now I know he is OK I will sleep a little easier tonight!

jmg · 24/03/2004 22:12

hear he is ok - not here!!

WideWebWitch · 24/03/2004 22:17

Well I'm glad I had baby on lap and couldn't even post 1 handed earlier then because I'd have said don't worry about it too. I thought it, tried to reach keyboard, couldn't, so left it! Glad he's OK though Twiglett.
