What should a family holiday be 'for'?

Out of the nanny on holiday thread.

Are holidays just for the kids?

Do all the family have a 'right' to enjoy different things on holiday?

So it was you next to us on the beach at Woolacombe custy
WWW, you left out d) and I am mightily intrigued. Was it a custy-type requirement?
We do something for everyone on hols - but as others have said here, by necessity you have to gear the daytimes more to the needs of very young children. In England specifically to be frank I find the biggest compromise we have to make is eating out. Whole children's menus/genuine welcome for children at restaurants thing in the UK is a big bugbear of mine

marina how dare you! i would never go to woolacombe

i think i do miself a slight diservce, daytime is for children. nightime is for vodka.

this year we are going snowboarding with out three teenagers. i would say thats a holiday specifically for the children. je suis gonna break ma leg ou est le vodka et coca sil vous plait? vite chuffin vite.

Ha ha Marina, I started typing while dd was getting her shoes on (can take a while, that!) then the 3 of us went out to get ds's hair cut, which despite being 5 minutes away took us 20 minutes because dd had her dolly in a buggy then we came back and it was still on my screen so I finished it off and pressed post! Without checking e was there...

apres ski, or wot, custy? (sod the piste)
lol @ thought of custy/marina parallel holidays in woolacombe! (Marina, nudging her bosom, a la Les Dawson at Hoxty, as Custy falls backwards from promenade, kids left open-mouthed with ice creams dripping through the planks as momma says "sshfhekjekjsfuksk, s'aright, i'll just be a minute...")

Holidays are for all the rows you don't have time for when you and your other half are at work. Surely everyone knows that.

Our holiday is for me and DH to build sandcastles and dig waterways on the beach without looking like strange people with childish passions!
(DH did a replica of Corfe Castle last week - easier as it's a ruin anyway lol)

Seriously, we do some things for most people eg a walk over the cliffs will double up with butterfly spottign (for DH), but mainly for the kids in the day - the oldest is 7. For me, a holiday from the school run and the ironing is break enough.

To be perfectly honest the words 'family' and 'holiday' are pretty much mutually exclusive though, aren't they?

Gobbledigook - I read your posts on the other thread and I have to say that we did rock pools and sand castles and Eden and loved it all (well DH didn't like Eden much but then he's a football fan and gets twitchy too far away from Upton Park). We visted Restormel a few years back. I love all that stuff. FWIW we took the kids to see Iron age villages and stone circles on holiday and they enjoyed that - but they've been brought up to it They've also done Wells Cathedral in the past and that was OK. Most things are OK TBH as long as an ice-cream is in the offing at some point.

Hols are for everyone who's there. Thankfully we're obviously childish enough to like things that my kids like too. They were quite happy playing pretend games and playing with the farm kittens so that we had a few hours to read papers and relax. My parents were with us for a few days and they looked after the kids for an evening so that we could go out for a meal. I love the fact that my kids have strong memories of our family holidays and I hope they will always remember them.

I'd love a holiday for just DH and I and that would be very different.
