Another one of my "theories" - this time about surnames

Posey · 22/03/2004 21:16

I keep having these little theories and where better than here to get a good cross-section of the population to try it out.

Anyway, this theory is that people who have unusual surnames, or ones that people always ask you to spell, at birth, marry men who do too. Those with "normal" or "common" (don't take offence at those phrases) surnames have husbands with equally straightforward surnames.

So what about you?
I fall into the former group, although its recently got easier as there is a new celebrity with the same name.

Well my maiden name I always had to sepll out, but DH's surname was very straightforward. Sorry!

tanzie · 22/03/2004 21:26

I have an unpronounceable and unspellable(to many people) first name (it's Slav), but maiden surname was very easy. DH has v common first name, but long, unusual, unspellable British surname. So, Posey, no to your theory!

JanHR · 22/03/2004 21:26

I am in the former category too.Only because there are afew spelling of by surname. DP shares his name with a town n Yorkshire but it is spelt differently

mummytojames · 22/03/2004 21:26

my name is a bit complicated and always being asked to speel it where as my partner name is very simple to spell we just say as in a boys name

ScummyMummy · 22/03/2004 21:28

Not married, Posey, but live in lover and I do both have normalish surnames (though v distinguished and literary sounding, I like to think,)

coppertop · 22/03/2004 21:28

I always had to spell out my maiden name. Dh's surname is very straightforward. I think it was part of the attraction.

hmb · 22/03/2004 21:29

Uncommon name myself, dh a common name, but I've blown your theory by keeping my name when I married!

lydialemon · 22/03/2004 21:32

Well, I had a French maiden name which nobody spelt or said correctly, and now I have a Greek Surname which is the same
So I fit your theory!

suzywong · 22/03/2004 21:34

My DH has the most common surname in the world
Mine is fairly commonplace, but the combination foxes most people

suzywong · 22/03/2004 21:35

should I mention that again?

WSM · 22/03/2004 21:39

I also blow your theory a bit. My maiden name had a slightly awkward spelling and my married name is verrrrrrry straightforward.

prufrock · 22/03/2004 21:39

Agree Posey. I fall into the former category (I once received a fax where my unusual maiden name had been misheard/written as coldclit ) and marries a man with a double barrelled name that I always have to spell and people always mispronounce.

Tommy · 22/03/2004 21:40

Sorry Posey, my name always has to be spelled out and people very often remark on how unusual it is (not if you're Italian...)DH's name is probably one of the most common British names so another blow to your theory I'm afraid.

ScummyMummy · 22/03/2004 21:41

LOL at coldclit, pru.

jampot · 22/03/2004 21:42

My maiden name is a popular Irish one but still I had to spell it out and my husband's one is very straightforward (but uncommon) but still I have to spell it out.

charlieplus3 · 22/03/2004 21:43

maiden name i have to spell and Dp's name too

coppertop · 22/03/2004 21:46

LOL at coldclit! It sounds like it should be a medical condition.

newbymum · 22/03/2004 21:50

Posey I to am one of the normal people and have one off the most common surnames SMITH partners is very normal as well lets say as in boys name. So your theory might be right?

jodee · 22/03/2004 21:56

Uncommon maiden name but very easy to spell, but I still had to spell it out to people as it was one of those common words that can be spelt in different ways (e.g. beech/beach)...

DH's surname; again, very common Irish one, but soooo many different combinations!

Gem13 · 22/03/2004 21:59

We both have fairly unusual names and people quite often think one or both of them funny. I've kept mine as it's 'me' and children have it as a middle so they are truly lumbered!

nutcracker · 22/03/2004 22:04

I don't think my surname is either commoon or uncommon and most people can usually spell it. Dp's surname is german (think of famous news agency but without the s). People can usually spell it but not pronounce it correctly.

Both maiden name and married name are very very simple, and actually very similar (the same first 3 letters)
