What kind of fishing does he want to do. My dh is very into all sorts but I know the equipment/technique is different whether he fancies doing coarse fishing or fly fishing or sea fishing etc. etc.

Let me know and I will get my dh to post some info on how to get started.

oooh thanks AGS ... thought I'd created a post that no-one would reply to

I think the easier the better ... don't want to put him off immediately !!

When asked he said .... I'd just love to sit in a boat on a lake and try and catch something ...

Does that make any sense ??

Thanks so much for replying ... DS was getting rather despondent

Right Crystal. DH is dictating!

For fresh water it sounds like he needs to get a long fly rod about 9 feet (#7/#8 rod and reel - a fishing shop would be able to supply that). The fishing line needs to be a slow sinking tip line appropriate to the rod (get shop to advise).

Local shops will best advise which type of flies to use as each area is different and this will also depend on the season.

Sitting on a boat, casting distance is not important. Having the right fly for the right area and local advice as to how to pull the line in (to make the fly look lifelike) will be important.

This online fishing store has some great value in fly fishing starter sets. You will need to get the line changed for slow sinking tip line. glasgow angling centre

Here is a link to some places I found which might suit in your area. down fishing info

This link has some information on a guide/instructor but for salt water fly fishing. If salt water is how he wants to go, then the equipment will be a lot more expensive and would probably be best to get advice from this guide. central fisheries board - co. down info

My dh loves fly fishing but did find it quite frustrating to begin with. Well worthwhile getting a video/dvd or book to explain the best way to cast.

As I said DH loves fishing so don't hesitate to come back if you want to know anything else.

Just a thought, if the lake is saltwater and he wants to try something a bit easier than fly to start out with he could try spinning.

He will need a 10ft spinning rod with a small bait casting reel loaded with 12lb line. The rod should be rated 15-25grams. Again, local advice on what type of spinners to use is invaluable but for bass a 'toby' spinner is most often used. And for seatrout, 'flying c' spinners are most frequently used.

Oooh, DH is on a roll now!
