That advert drives me mad. You get extra clubcard points for using fewer bags not less

yes!

UnquietDad · 28/08/2006 22:17

Noticed "5 items or less" has correctly become "5 items or fewer" now at M&S. Rory Mcgrath had a moan about it on "Grumpy Old Men". He claimed to have got it changed.

Olihan · 28/08/2006 22:20

Tesco's 'I can wipe myself' toddler bum wipes say that they are 'flushable singularly'. Is that right, or should it be 'singly'?

Actually, that looks really wrong written down. Having kids has fried my brain. I used to be good at stuff like this.

Posey · 28/08/2006 22:20

Jolly good.
There have been a few threads on language/spelling over the years on mn and the less/fewer thing always crops up. We are quite a pedantic bunch

Doesn't singularly mean that thats all they can do? Singly - one by one? Oh I don't know. Need dh here, he's the one than got me like this in the first place!!

jura - you and my dh with the is and are thing. A real pet hate of his when people get it wrong.

Sainsburys are changing their "10 items or less" signs because of complaints. It made it into either the TElegraph or theMail over the weekend. Made me simle.

80sMum · 29/08/2006 19:38

Oh yes, I agree! That Tesco ad got me going too!

an historian
hoofs and roofs (but hooves is accepted now much as I grumble when I see it)

(there are more but these have to be my main hates)

Saw a pencil case ages ago in the Disney Store that said something like 'you're plan failed...' can't quite remember but it was an Incredibles one.

My poor students used to hate me

sdjones2 · 30/08/2006 16:24

Indith, bet mine hate me more. Just about as much as the Tesco manager, whom I have accosted over the fewer/less matter. What I fail to comprehend is why the signage should be gramatically correct in Welsh, but not in English.

Keeps me happy, chuntering around the shop, high street, etc.

ANOTHER one that really pisses me off, and it is more and more on radio, TV, etc., is you and I. Please explain why last nights TV show was "My Small Breasts and I" and not "Me and My Small Breasts". You hear it all the time. Grrrrr

noddyholder · 30/08/2006 16:29

I thought singularly meant they could only be flushed and no other wipes could.

KathyMCMLXXII · 30/08/2006 16:33

Sooooo agree about FEWER.

There was a letter to the Times (I think) reporting that someone's local supermarket had a sign saying 'You're toilets'.

Posey · 30/08/2006 20:07

Jura - dh will always notice if someone gets are and is mixed up, but depends on who it is as to whether he'll say something (if its someone on the BBC then he'll yell at the TV!)
He will also correct work colleagues but thats because its his job.

Agree entirely.Hate bad grammar and spelling.
I had a go at Tesco for this new campaign of theirs abour points for reusing bags. All well and good except that they tell you about it in an enormous mail shot that is not on recycled paper.....
I'm also horrified to see the use of the word, "shined" more and more regularly. Surely it should be "shone"?
I'm turning into a "points of view" type......
