On how much you'd spend on someone very close to you (so close family or best friend):

Just to say sorry you're having a bad time:
Sorry you're ill:
Happy Birthday:
Wedding present:
Other:

Or just generally? £20? £30? £40? £50? And what about if you were sending them something exceptional, that you knew they'd absolutely love and would delight them and cheer them no end? TIA to anyone who can be bothered to answer!

£20 on family but more on Dh and my kids

SenoraPostrophe · 27/08/2006 18:54

if I knew of something that would just make the perfect gift, then yup to 50 quid I guess. that doesn't happen very often thankfully!

otherwise 20 quid ish or 50 for a wedding.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 27/08/2006 18:54

Well I am totally broke most of the time so usually under $20, although I make sure its had a lot of thought put into it.

birthdays generally £20 - £30 and then weddings around £40.

fuzzywuzzy · 27/08/2006 18:56

sorry you're ill (gotta be very ill though, man flu doesn't get anything)- a bunch of flowers usually (so about £20-£30), or practical help which doesn't cost anything.

Happy birthday - Depends on what the person has been saying they want for the past year I got a friend an extended weekend break in France in the past.....

Wedding present- I'm aisan so it's generally gold jewelery of some sort.

Other- dpeends don't know...

clairemow · 27/08/2006 18:59

Maybe:

Just to say sorry you're having a bad time: £10 (a little token, just to show you're thinking of them)
Sorry you're ill: £10/15
Happy Birthday: £20-30
Wedding present: £50 if close friend, maybe £30 if not so close

If I saw something I knew they'd really really love, I'd probably buy it even if it was expensive, depending on whether it was near pay day or not...!. Once did this with a picture for my parents, but said it was for both their birthdays (a month apart, thank god!!).

Tinker · 27/08/2006 19:03

Same as clairemow

Dottydot · 27/08/2006 19:05

weddings probably £40 - £50, the others between £20 and £30.

Twiglett · 27/08/2006 19:07

Just to say sorry you're having a bad time: home-baked cake, bunch of flowers or bottle of wine - up to £20
Sorry you're ill: card / flowers

Happy Birthday: £20

Wedding present: £50

Other:

hermykne · 27/08/2006 19:08

bad time - bunch of £5 flowers
youre ill - compasion
HP - 10/15
wedding 50

Tinker · 27/08/2006 19:09

Actually, want to revise - sorry you're ill would just get Soz.

CountessDracula · 27/08/2006 19:13

bad time - a phone call or a visit with bunch of flowers
ill - if very ill then flowers or something they would like maybe £25. If a bit ill then a phone call (saying pull yourself together )
Happy Birthday - £25 to £50 (more for dh/dd)
Wedding - £100
Other - usually get people housewarming pressies about £20
If I see something I think someone will really really love then I never mind spending more (or less)

SenoraPostrophe · 27/08/2006 19:16

hmm, perhaps i should clarify that I took bad time/ill to mean a really bad time or really ill (like divorce or cancer or something). I also spend 20 quid ish on birthdays when I remember, which is not that often. probably works out to an average of a fiver a year for my siblings.

I may have misrepresented myself as being more generous than I am!

lorina · 27/08/2006 19:32

Sorry you're ill : card and help ie would go shopping for them and pay for it. Wouls iron or hoover etc.

Happy birthday : £30ish but more for a 'big' one or if invited to party

Wedding : £100 is the going rate for invitation to a bells and whistles do.

Other : baby being born ? About £40.

Happy Birthday: £15 is my budget for the next couple of years at least
Wedding present: £20 usually but nobody that special has got married lately so might be more for special friends
