How long did it take you to learn to drive ???

Can it be done in a year, only having one lesson a week ???

I really need to learn to drive before going to uni in sept/oct 2005.

I have no driving experience at all so would be starting from scratch, gears and everything.

I started learning in december 2002, and passed in december 2003! I had a lesson a week with a privite intructor who was great. It took me about 10 lessons to actually get out of 2nd gear and do more that 10mph. After about 6 months I started going out with DH, mum, cousin, even my Dad took me out ONCE (he hates learners, make him scared Lol) and the practice helped greatly. I passed my theory after the third attempt and passed my test on my first try (which shocked me lots) I really didn't want to learn to drive as the idea scared the living daylights out of me and I was a very nervous passenger, so kept putting it off. DH phoned up his old instructor and booked the lesson for me. I felt sick and was shaking when the day came, and I was so nearly sick when I came home. But now I have done it I enjoy driving.
Good luck!!

stupidgirl · 18/03/2004 23:55

What a horrible story eddm. My first instructor was a bit of a perv, but nothing like that. That's truly horrifying.

Good luck saint shar

Started learning when I was 17, had 4 tests, failed them all. Gave up until I was pregnant with dd2, aged 29. Passed 2nd (6th!) time then. The difference was that I needed to be able to drive with 2 children, and I had loads of practice with dh (v patient man), who made me drive to work every morning. Also had an incident in a multi-storey which resulted in me driving round and crying at the size of every space! 5 years on (and being the only driver now that dh is banned), I am much more confident and enjoy driving.

Still feel sick when I think about tests, though. But it's just something you have to get through.

emmatmg · 19/03/2004 07:24

About 20-25 1 hours lessons spread from July or August 1990 to February 1991.

Amazingly I passed first time but didn't own a car until 1998 so was probably abit or a liability out on the roads for the first time then.

JennH · 19/03/2004 12:50

It took me 18mths and 6 tests (oh the shame) it was very very expensive and stressful. Each time I failed the test i cried for days.

BUT once I did it it was wonderful and I am an ok driver!
I think a yr will be fine.

marthamoo · 19/03/2004 12:59

Tamum, I hereby absolve you of non-driving guilt. Just think how healthy we must be walking everywhere...and what an ecologically sound message we give our children.

Yeah...wish I was brave enough to do it too

collision · 19/03/2004 13:19

I have heard that it takes 24 hours to learn to drive which is 24 lessons. It took me 9 months and I passed first time ! sorry.

You can do it but try and get practise inbetween.
HTH

tamum · 19/03/2004 13:22

Hurrah! Thank you so much marthamoo, I feel much better now

I do have occasional smug moments about keeping my children fit by walking everywhere, but it doesn't help much really.

Dmum · 19/03/2004 13:27

It took me around 15 months with a 5 month break in the middle. I passed 2nd time. I had a really good instructor who was very patient and never got annoyed with me. I think she mentioned the average is around 40 hours instruction. I have a friend who did an intensive course (I think it was 2 weeks?) and passed her test 1st time. I never, ever thought I would be able to drive and it's given me such freedom. Go for it!!

lydialemon · 20/03/2004 12:54

I passed on the third attempt after about 45hrs of lessons! Luckily for me I took mine way before parallel parking and theory tests were introduced, otherwise it would have taken a lot longer. It took me at least another year to get confident with parking, lots of practising at midnight outside peoples houses!

I am the only one though who is the ONLY driver in the household? DH has never seen the point after I got my licence, and doesn't have any interest in learning. TBH I don't think I could relinquish control of the car now!

lydialemon · 20/03/2004 12:55

Of course, that should be 'Am I....'

emmatmg · 20/03/2004 13:10

Lydia, mine was before the theory test and parallel parking too and I would never have passed if it was around then.

Tamum, I walk everywhere too and only use the car once a week to go shopping when DH is at home so I get 1.5 hours off at Asda. I prefer walking and even do if the car is outside.

susanmt · 20/03/2004 13:43

I've failed 3 times already, and am trying to get up the energy to start again ......

tigermoth · 20/03/2004 17:47

have just skimmed this thread. I think many poeple could pass a test after 52 lessons, nutcracker, but I wasn't one of them. I had over 100 and went through three or four instructors.

IME if an instructor puts you down as a slow learner, they don't treat you as well. I imagine that their performance record looks better if their pupils pass the test, so they concentrate on the better ones. As a total struggler, I got used to having appointments cancelled at the last minute, or a stand in instructor substituted for my regular one. And I found it difficult to book extra lessons just before my test - that they knew and I knew I had a big chance of failing. Bear this in mind when you start lessons.

I think it's really good to be able to practice in a private car, doing things like three point turns and parking in a deserted car park. If you have no access to a car, this will slow things up.

The good news is that on my third attempt I did pass. I hardly drove for 5 years and all my confidence melted away. I very slowly picked u the threads when I was forced to. I was running a market stall and my driver moved away, so I had to sort out my transport myself.

After lots of practice, I will now drive across London, go on motorways, drive abroad, without too many butterflies in my stomach. But it took years, and passing my driving test was just the beginning of it. I am really pleased I stuck at it since I was such a no hoper and more that one instructor gave up on me.

tigermoth · 20/03/2004 17:50

ps has anyone mentioned that you can just apply to drive cars with an automatic gear box? then you won't have to learn gear changes. If you want to pass your test quickly, that might help. Do they still have a separate automatic test, I wonder - it's been years since I took mine.

tamum · 20/03/2004 18:03

I don't think the test is really different, apart from the some of the boxes they have to tick, but your licence will only be for automatics. We have an automatic, so that's what I did. I had had a few lessons several years previously in a car with gears, and I did find it easier in an automatic, at least initially. The only real problem is that automatics are generally more expensive and less widely available in the second-hand market, but it's definitely worth bearing in mind.

CONNEELY · 21/03/2004 22:30

i have just passed the theory and am looking to re start up lessons,i live near dunstable, does anyone know of any decent instructers???

lou33 · 21/03/2004 23:11

Bloke called Marston runs a driving school called Easidrive . He's great. Taught dh. In Luton.

handlemecarefully · 22/03/2004 08:24

Took about 6 tests (spread over about 6 years...I kept stopping and starting). I'm actually quite a good driver now (it was the nerves that made me fail).

In answer to your question I think it can be done in a year with one lesson a week - as long as your really, really focus and concentrate.

slug · 23/03/2004 21:02

Dh doesn't have a licence. His theory is; he drinks I drive. Typical man.

I still think you're all being ripped off. I can't believe that it takes that long to learn how to drive. I don't think it's you lot, I reckon the driving instructors are to blame.

collision · 23/03/2004 21:05

My dh does the same Slug. I would drive up the motorway for 4 hours with him in the car to see my parents.....he would take a few beers and a big bag of sweets and then when we got there, moan about how tired he was!! Drives me mad. Refuses to learn.

Bozza · 23/03/2004 21:26

see your point slug. I had 10 lessons between sept and nov 1990 (aged 17) and passed first time despite being involved in an accident (write-off)with an uninsured driver the afternoon before my test which meant that the next time I got behind the wheel was for my pre-test lesson. But my Dad had already taught me how to drive and so the lessons were just polishing.

stupidgirl · 23/03/2004 21:42

Hmmm, I'm fairly convinced my driving instructor kept me hanging on to sqeeze more money out of me. I asked for weeks if I could put in for my test, and was told each time 'in a couple more weeks...' drove me mad.

With my first test though (and 3rd instuctor!) she turned to me afterwards and said 'well, I never really expected you to pass' well thanks so much for telling me!

mummytojames · 23/03/2004 21:45

i had bettween one and two leasons a week and i passed after a year and three failers and one cancel
