On holiday in Swanage a few weeks back my dd had a hair braid put in on the beach...the lady plaits a thin bit of hair from the very top of the her head, then wraps coloured thread on it with a few beads at the end. DD has loved it but it has just fallen off in the bath leaving an unsighly bald spot on top of her head right on her parting. Im feeling really bad now for letting her have it in the first place, but she really wanted to have it down. The hair will grow back wont it! Will it start to grow soon or does it take ages. DH was keen in the first place so I know Im in for some flack now. The lady who did it said you could keep it in for 4-6 months so Im surprised for it to come out this soon. I was planning to unravel it at the end of the holidays. Learnt my lesson there I guess.

Dd had one of done in Portugal thi Summer and it lasted about 3 weeks and then came out leaving a bald patch but as the girl had put it in under her parting it isn't noticeable. I had noticed the hair breaking and a frayed appearance to the braid before this happened. I had told her we would need to take it out the next morning but in the night it broke off and she cried her eyes out.

pepsi · 21/08/2006 11:15

Is there any sign of regrowth.

The hair should start to regrow soon.

The weight of the braid and stress it placed on the little bit of hair has just broken the hair and not damaged the hair follicle.

I cant believe Ive been so stupid. Im really hacked off about it. DD has long hair so its going to take ages. The lady said it might fray a bit but she didnt mention about it snapping off, suppose its obvious but I just didnt think about it. If anyone else sees them being done I would say dont unless you are only planning to have it in for a week or so. This one last three weeks also.

braiding is normally done very tightly. yes anyone, especially those with fine hair, risks hairloss by putting them in. ask braider specifically not to but in tight. it may not last as long but if you are doing a whole head, it can also cause headache.

pepsi · 24/08/2006 10:10

Still really worring about this, how long should it be before new hair should come? Is there a point where I should worry if it doesnt?

misdee · 24/08/2006 10:12

it will grow back. its just like someone has pulled her hand out in a small clump.

pepsi · 24/08/2006 10:14

thanks misdee, how long do you reckon though? I know hair grows half inch a month but not sure about actual new hairs coming through.

Sorry, no advice just sympathy. My DD2 has had hers for 3 weeks now and it doesn't look too tight. DD1 has had plenty and they have never snapped. I am sure the hair will grow back in time.

DD1 had half a head of plaits done at the same time in majorca 3 weeks ago - it hurt like hell she said and they started to come out on Sunday.

As we were taking the rest out she (and I) got really scared as she lost loads and loads of hair but she does have thick hair so it seems to have stood the "trauma" but she says she will never have it done again. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with thinner hair though.

I first posted this message in August re: dd's hair, she still has a bald patch. Should I be worried and who could I go and see to find out if it will grow back.

I would have thought the braid was just too heavy and stressed the hair as it came out of the head - until it broke. I would not have thought it would damage the hair follicles underneath.

Is there no regrowth at all ?

pepsi · 28/11/2006 15:41

Just the odd hair but the patch has filled in.

Sorry, that should have read that the patch hasnt filled in, still bald.

could you ask your hairdresser ?

throckenholt · 29/11/2006 07:52

might be worth going to the gp - if it is bothering her.

Sorry to drag up an old post.

The exact same thing happened to my daughter this summer. Did the hair ever grow back? Or has it happened to anyone else?

shyder87 · 17/11/2023 11:38

hi this happened to my 4 year old daughter over the october half term- we went to the aquarium and she got a braid. it fell out after 2 days, few weeks later i noticed a bald patch- got frightened spoke to the gp said it was alopecia. we have private health care and took her to see a specialist. she's given creams and a spray to help the hair growth however the dr said may not be due to the braid. really just want reassurance that its happened to others with a braid- did the hair eventually grow back?

Lottt · 17/11/2023 14:49

You can see the tiny follicles of hair hopefully growing now on my daughters head. It's been over three months since the hair braid fell out though but I think they are finally starting to grow again.

astl · 21/02/2025 23:55

Sorry, I known this is a really old thread but came across it in a bit of a panic.

My Dd (10) got one of these holiday thread braid things at the weekend and tonight I noticed a tiny bald spot right in front of where it is.

I've been googling and everything I'm finding online looks exactly like alopecia arteria.

We then took the braid out in case it was making it look worse. There is a definite bald spot (about the size/shape of a 5p) but it's not loss of hair from the braid, it's right next to where it was and perfectly circular.

I'm going back and forward between thinking it's too much of a coincidence and must be related to the broad. To complete panic that my poor Dd has maybe got alopecia and could potentially lose a lot/all of her hair.

I'm actually in tears at the thought. Mainly as she's so self conscious and I'd worry about her getting teased etc

Anyone any advice/experience. I'll take her to drs next week if I can get an appointment but don't want to waste their time if it's braid related and will grow back on its own.

Thanks in advance!

Hey please don’t stress exactly the same thing happened to my 5 year old. Even went to the dermatologist and looked at her head under the microscope. The hair loss is from the traction of the braid! Hopefully the hair should start growing back after a few months! My daughters has grown back perfectly!

astl · 22/02/2025 08:01

Thanks so much @shyder87 was the bald patch your Dd had from the hair that was actually in the braid, or next to it?

My DDs is next to it. If it had been the exact same hair I wouldn't be worried.

Really appreciate your response 🥰

shyder87 · 22/02/2025 08:12

@astl it was both the hair in the braid and next to it…. The braid had fallen out and took along the hair around it- was around the size of a pound coin! Took her to the gp and they did say Alopecia and gave some cream however took her to a dermatologist privately and they looked with the microscope and confirmed it was traction from the braid! Hope your little one is ok 👌🏽

Thanks so much. My Dd only had hers in for a few days and the actual hair that was in the braid is undamaged. This is just slightly in front and to the left of it.

In fact I noticed the bald spot (about size of a 5p) and that's what prompted me to take the braid out hoping it would cover the spot but it's not. It's just a different spot next to it x
