Push needed to book a smear please (I find them rather scary!)

After the last thread about them on here (about 6 months ago) I finally booked one and actually turned up at it....

But the results came back inconclusive and they asked me to re-book which I promptly forgot to do...

So they sent me another letter giving me an appointment time and date. But I got scared and didnt go...

Another letter arrives asking me to book an appointment....

I find them painful and they scare me so I really dont want to go. Im 23 - is it still important to have them when you are young?

Need a shove in the right direction please and some reassuring words about how they arnt always painful and my nasty one must have been a one off experience....

You know you must go so please just pick up the phone now.

They shouldn't be painful so maybe that was a one-off.

The only discomfort I've had was sheer embaressment when I ended up with a nurse who was the Mum of a boy at DD's nursery (found it difficult to look her in the eye after that!!)

WigWamBam · 21/08/2006 10:46

Go.

They aren't always painful. And if they are, they're over within two minutes.

TWO MINUTES. You can stand two minutes. Promise yourself a nice treat when you come out ... and tell yourself "in ten minutes it will all be over and I'll be sitting in the cafe eating a doughnut" or whatever your treat is.

Two minutes. But they're two minutes that could save your life.

southeastastra · 21/08/2006 10:46

'shove' there you go

BettySpaghetti · 21/08/2006 10:47

embarrassment (?) -sorry, I can never spell that word

jalopy · 21/08/2006 10:48

Tamba, phone for the appt. right now. I promise you that's the hardest part. Your next message here must be that you have done it!!!!ok? .

MrsJohnCusack · 21/08/2006 10:48

go go go go go go

the last one I had I barely noticed TBH - it was painless. and as WWB says they are quick. Much better to get it over and done with so you don't worry about it, also better to get it done rather than get ill eh? It's one of the most effective preventative things you can get done.

Dunnyjo · 21/08/2006 10:48

I am 24 and i need to make sure i have smears donetoo as after having children. My last one i could not stop shaking and crying as i was so petrified! However when i went the nurse was really nice and supportive and it was slightly uncomforatable but it was absolutley fine It has to be done like dh said if i dont and something is wrong it will not be dealt with.
ou will be fine, tell the nurse how you feel and i garantee she will be very supportive amd make you feel alot calmer. They are not pleasant but v. important.
ou will be fine Tamba lots of hugs x x x

Tutter · 21/08/2006 10:48

my mum had cervical canver

there, if that doesn't make you go, nothing will

Cappuccino · 21/08/2006 10:49

god Tamba are you really 23? I don't think you've mentioned it before.

off you go. get your test booked. go on now.

pepsi · 21/08/2006 10:51

Try and be strong and make that appointment right now, its something none of us like doing. You are feeling bad now so the only thing that is going to make you feel better is getting it done....on walking out of the surgery you will feel much relieved Im sure.

JessaJam · 21/08/2006 10:52

I need to book one too, am overdue by a couple of years now (year 1 I was pregnant, year 2 I ...have no genuine reason for not booking an appt) WHY don't I just get on with it?

Tamba my experiences of smears are that they are 'uncomfortable' rather than painful, but it does help if you breath out slowly and r-e-l-a-x ...

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/08/2006 10:52

I have this thing about that silver car jack type thing snapping shut.... \

last time it actually made me bleed and I think thats why the results were inconclusive.

I shouldnt be such a wuss I know

I do keep makin appointments - its just dragging myself there thats difficult.

Stop pithering about, get on the bloody phone and make the appointment.

And then GO TO IT!

(And yes, I know I'm shouting).

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/08/2006 10:54

LMAO I read the thread title as 'Posh needed to book a smear test' and thought celebrity news coveraga had reached a new low.

But yes, just go ahead and get it over with! I try to book mine for the evening clinic and have a glass of wine beforehand to relax.

educatingrita · 21/08/2006 10:56

You know it needs doing in your heart and until you book the appointment- AND keep it, it will hang over you.

If youve had 1 inconclusive result then its doubly important.Think how you woul feel if you left it another 6 months then this one cam back having advanced further and they tell you "if only youd come sooner"

no-one enjoys these things and yes if done incorrctly it does pinch a little, but over in minutes. If you left it completely and ended up havong cervical cancer, the treatment for that is FAR more painfull and invasive. Nuff said.

JessaJam · 21/08/2006 10:57

Tamba...if you keep not turning up your GP can take you off their patient list...this means you have to find an alternative GP surgery to attend...FAR better to phone and cancel an appt with a day to spare (or cancel a pm appt in the am) that just fail to turn up and waste the appointment slot...BUT don't do this for your smear...go to the appointment!

mummyplonk · 21/08/2006 10:57

Well Done Tamba! I am another who had abnormal cells in my 20's and they just did a little bit of treatment up the hospital but it wasnt painfull, it could have got so much worse if I had left it.

What I always did was book a hair or nail appointment for afterwards to treat yourself. , (which also meant I had to go out the the house to the appointment)

alibubbles · 21/08/2006 14:42

I made my DD (20) go and have one last week. She said it was absolutely fine and didn't feel a thing. All her friends are going now they won't be the first!

LIZS · 21/08/2006 14:46

I've had a reminder too . Tried to get it done in February but the nurse wouldn't do it as it hadn't been 3 full years since my last and she was a temp. Am thinking of booking a Nuffield health check which includes one but not sure if I should really wait .

waterfalls · 21/08/2006 14:48

I'll give you a push

I know a 21 yr old that died of cervical cancer, leaving a 18 month old and a 3 year old behind

Now get your arse up the surgery

AllieBongo · 21/08/2006 14:50

Tamba love i didn't go for 6 yrs. it was fine, and i was so relieved once i'd got the results. i wil be your virtual hand holder

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/08/2006 15:23

Bloody hell Waterfalls

You are right - that will get me moving.

Another push from me, one of my best friends had cervical cancer last year - she had to have a hysterectomy, she is 31 and has no children. They just got it in time.
