some friends of mine are moving from up north. the dh has a job at Millbank. They currently live in a 6-bed Edwardian house with big garden surrounded by fields - understandably they're rather fond of it! I think they would prefer for him to commute and them to have at least a bit of the space they;re used to but they are open to all ideas. he could commute into Waterloo, Charing Cross or Victoria. they have family up north so are looking at fairly regular trips up there. I guess commuting into Kings Cross is probably do-able - it's only a few stops on the Victoria line. Any ideas? They are pretty clueless....

How much do they have to spend?

drosophila · 19/08/2006 20:24

Where is Millbank?

I know - that's the question isn't it. I don't know tbh - a reasonable whack I should imagine - but not top dollar. Let's say at least £500,000, quite possibly more. I think they could compromise on no. of bedrooms - only 2 kids. But I think in some ways they need to pin down an area first - as every area has such huge variance in prices anyway.

Millbank is on the river near the houses of parliament

presumably want to be north of the river so they can go north easily?

foxinsocks · 19/08/2006 20:33

tbh, if they are going oop north often, you'd want to be on the north side because it's only 5 or so stops down from Euston or Kings Cross.

My sis used to live in Hertford and honestly, some of the journeys from here around the south west side of london up round the west side of the M25 were pretty awful!

hello again foxinsocks - I know it well - all my family are up north - but there's a pay off isn;t there - easy commute to work on a daily basis vs an hour less journey to visit family up north. But I suspect you're right - certainly if I was moving London-way now I would give north London / north of London v careful consideration

I work near the Houses of Parliament and I live in Furzedown and commute from Streatham Common Station to Victoria. It takes me less than 20mins on the train and I walk about 20mins from Victoria to work but you can get busses or Tubes I just like the walk.

Areas south of London you should look at:

There are houses around Streatham Common that are fantastic (Sarah Beeney now lives in one) but may cost more than 500k not sure.

Clapham
Wandsworth Common
Balham
Wimbledon
Battersea
