I got talked to like I was a mad woman today...

So I had a hospital out-patients appt this afternoon and the consultant confirmed that it's pretty likely I've got coeliac disease (which is a bugger to spell) and I was being all calm, until he mentioned he needs to do a small bowel biopsy to confirm... I went to pieces - they'll have to do an endoscopy - tube down my throat - and while I'm fine with operations and other stuff, the thought of a tube down my throat WHILE I'M STILL AWAKE is just terrifying me. So I asked for a general anaesthetic and was crying and he clearly thought I was insane...

He put on his best doctor-type calm, quiet voice and promised to sedate me so much that I wouldn't remember a thing! And even when I'd calmed down and apologised for being a wuss, he still used his I'm-talking-to-a-mad-person voice..!

Ahem. Am going to be a gibbering wreck when I have to have it - maybe they'll bonk me over the head or something to shut me up?!

poor you

but they have great drugs you know - bet you won't remember a thing

a good friend of mine has coeliac's (sp.?) and she manages just fine now. has a pack of crackers permanently stuffed in her handbag...

MrsJohnCusack · 17/08/2006 17:42

oh poor you

DH had an endoscopy last year and was totally & utterly terrified about the whole thing. honestly, the sedation worked like a dream, it was nowhere near as bad as he'd envisaged and he didn't feel a thing.

Dottydot · 17/08/2006 17:43

Really? that's really good to know - I can't convince myself that sedation will work - I really really wanted a GA but the consultant wouldn't have it. Was mortified I lost the plot though - and he's even put me down as urgent as I'm so worried about it! (and probably referred me to psychiatry...).

Hi dotty, I'm used to being spoken to like that so perhaps I need to work on that...!

I've had an endoscopy many years ago and I honestly don't remember much of it. I think that the thought of it, like most things, is worse then what actually happens. I just felt too spaced afterwards to remember anything so please don't worry too much.

Failing that, yes go in like a mad woman again and they'll bonk you over the head and then you'll definitely not remember it

Blandmum · 17/08/2006 17:45

my dh has an endoscopy years ago. They pump you so full; of valium you don't care what happens.....or so he said

MrsJohnCusack · 17/08/2006 17:46

oh it will work
I remember having sedation for a vile tooth extraction. I was extremely sceptical that it could work, but it really did, it was fab.

that's GOOD he made it urgent! I think doctors often have a special tone of voice for people who throw wobblers - he doesn't really think you're mad!

VestibularProwess · 17/08/2006 17:47

I think doctors alway talk like that. It's as if all their patients are small, unpredictable children.

Policemen also have to develop a special, obnoxious way of talking to people.

Sorry to hear about the possible coeliac dx, but equally, it's great to get a dx as you can sort out your diet and control it. Stop the harm. You might even find you feel much better and with loads more energy if you go off the gluten.

Good luck dotty.

VestibularProwess · 17/08/2006 17:48

Actually Dotty, it might be a good idea to keep up the jibbering wreck behaviour. He's more likely to want to sedate you further as he won't want you to be all over the place while he's doing his tube stuff.

fairyjay · 17/08/2006 17:52

My mum had surgery using an la as well as some sort of sedation. She thought they had given her a ga by mistake, as she couldn't remember anything. You'll be fine - hope you don't have to wait too long!

Tutter · 17/08/2006 17:52

if it's any consolation dotty, when i was diagnosed with my ectopic pg, the consultant used a teletubbie analogy to describe the mechanics of ttc post-ectopic. teletubbies ffs !

Dottydot · 17/08/2006 18:00

Definitely VP - I plan to become hysterical and demand extra drugs - very like when I was in labour and asked for a f**king epidural NOW!!!

tutter - am struggling to imagine what on earth the doctor said to you...

suejonez · 17/08/2006 18:02

You won't be awake - you will be sedated. Thats not sedated as in it will make you nice and calm but sedated as in, you won;t have a bloody clue which way is up or what your name is and you probably won't remember it afterwards either.

Yes you will be a gibbering wreck but you will wonder afterwards what the fuss was all about...

Tutter · 17/08/2006 18:10

mrsjc - he was attempting to explain that my remaining fallopian tube would waft around and be able to pick up and egg from the other side. ahem, like the teletubbie hoover.

he must have been struck by my intellect and chose an analogy i'd be able to understand . and to choose a childrens tv character was rather questionable given the situation i thought!

anyway, he was right - ds resulted from egg from left ovary being picked up by right noono... sorry, fallopian tube

this has got me worriaed i am on the waiting list for an endoscopy is there another one that go's the other way??

don't b;ame you for being worried./ I am sure the doc had seen much worse reactions.

Dottydot · 17/08/2006 18:34

Tutter - that's completely bizarre!! I think I'd understand that less than a more 'grown up' way!!

SueJonez - it's good to think of it like that. I've got horrible visions of being awake and not being able to control it - but yes, sleepy and out of it is a very good image!

Right. Will stop wittering now - thanks all for stories of easy peasy endoscopies!!

"this has got me worriaed i am on the waiting list for an endoscopy is there another one that go's the other way?? "

Isn't that a colposcopy????!

Dottydot · 17/08/2006 18:37

Hi - I was going to say the same thing - I think 2shoes that would be a colonoscopy - it depends which bit of you they want to have a look at!

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 17/08/2006 18:41

rabbit and I must go to the same doctor because mine always speak to me like that too!

don't worry dotty - I'm sure he's used to gibbering wrecks when it comes to something like that. I can't think of many people who'd welcome a giant tube being stuck down their throat!

2shoes · 17/08/2006 19:01

sorry about that must have got my scopy's the wrong

I am sure the sedation will work. ds had to be sedated for some dental work and he was well out of it and didn't remeber a thing.(he is 14)
