If we only have one TV, not tuned into a signal, for watching DVDs only, do we need a TV licence?

Our living room TV died and we have decided not to replace it for at least a year, since we rarely watch TV anyway.

Our eldest is only 3 so it seems like a good time to do this, since she's unaffected by what her peers may be watching. But, we'd like to set up the portable TV in the playroom to play DVDs only. Our DVD player is not a recordable one. We've put our freeview box and VCR into the loft and the portable is not tuned into a signal. Are we OK to get rid of the TV licence?

This is interesting, HRH, so who does your DH work for and what's the difference between an officer and enforcer?

(I have a great respect for the Beeb at its best and don't mind paying, btw, but I can see how other people feel differently about this issue).

Got to say that we have only had brilliant dealings with tv people. We had a tricky one about 8 years ago where we were doing major work on our house and so lived out in rented for a year. Even though we left attached tvs upstairs in our home, they were really understanding, easily transfered it over to rental address, no forms, all over the phone. When we moved back I forgot to move the licence. I had a lovely man come round - no threats or accusations, very understanding, very polite. He went away and sorted it all out for me, no fine or problem for being busy. Wish the council tax and water companies had been as understanding....

I think I have found the answer on the TV Licensing Website under FAQs.

"What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?"

"You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence."

"Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:"

So QOQ, it sounds like it will be a good idea to keep the TV in the playroom as we don't have an aerial point in that room. And if we ensure the TV is not tuned to a signal, we should be OK. Might we get to meet your DH or does he work in one local area?
