Have decided to get a puppy. Having looked at many breeds, I have come to the conclusion that Welsh terriers would be suitable for us.... What's your experience of them?

Are you being ignored Frenchgirl?? Just looked them up on the web and they look similar to Wire Haired Fox Terriers, a neighbour used to have one of those when I was a kid and he was gorgeous. Have you thought about a Border Terrier - we used to have one (she lives with my Mum now though) and it is certainly a breed I would recommend.

weyhey Jaybee!!!!! Thanks for that, I am going to call a couple of breeders now to see what they say.....

My dog book says they are like mini Airedales. I think they look like teddy bears, very cute. Apparently they don't shed much hair and make good pets and guard dogs. Can be a bit unruly, so you need to show them who's boss, and also lots of walkies as they are energetic. Have fun!

Thanks suedonim, I am falling in love with these.... Not having much luck contacting breeders though, will have to try again tonight (hopefully they're all out walking the dogs!!)

We had a Welsh Terrier when I was a child. We got when he was 6 months old. He was very affectionate and patient with me and my 6-year-old brother. However, he was very aggressive towards other dogs. We couldn't let him off the lead very often, as he would sometimes bite other dogs. With ourselves and friends etc, he was wonderful and my brother and I have lots of happy memories of him. Now my brother has an Airedale, who is also affectionate and calmer than our Welsh Terrier but they've all got their own personality, obviously. I'd love to know which breed you finally choose and how you get on.

Thanks countrylady, that's useful to know. I had a chat with a very good breeder last night and am still very keen on welsh terriers. Hope dh will be convinced too, he's too busy to get too involved at the moment...

Friends had a Welsh terrier when I was a child. Lovely dog but others I have known have been very yappy and a bit scatty. I would go for a Border Terrier every time we had 2 when I was a child and they are the best. Very affectionate, full of character and just plain adorable!

I'd vote for a Border Terrier. We've got one called Kipper (no... not named after the fish...), and he's just FAB. Cannot fault him really. Good guard dog, very laid back temperament, and excellent with children - some of whom are scared stiff of anything on 4 legs. Will run for hours on a walk, but seems quite happy on only 15-20 mins if I'm short of time.

Thanks stoo and blue2, I'll look into them too. I have to say though that the looks of the welshie do it for me.....

French girl, there's a breed selector at the Purina page that helps you to find the more suitable breed for your lifestyle. Have a look at /sy.adiho.com/ASA/Controller?sysid=4&appid=9901{}\this}

I wanted a welsh terrier for a long time but was never able to find a breeder, even though the selector pointed us to the french poodle we decided to get a yorkie as we found them so cute and oversaw the sacrosant terrier advice: "they need to know who is the boss". In less than 2 weeks as he was aproaching puberty he dug a hole in a wall, removed all the wall paper of the landing, ate the legs of four chairs and we needed to have 2 french doors replaced as he has bitten through them. He used to escape a lot, one day I opened the door and he jumped into the ambulance that had came to pickup nextdoor neighbour but when he finally was an inch of causing a trafic accident we decided that if he couldn't go to classes he would need to find a new home. He graduated with honours and its a lovely lad now.

Well link didn't work, copy and paste the following in your address bar:

Chandra, thanks for that, I'll book some classes now!!!! Do they work for dh as well, he is not very obedient...... Thanks for the link, will have a look now. I have found quite a lot on the net on welshies already, but don't think I had seen the site you're referring to.

I don't know if it will work for your husband but it definitively will for teenagers (and looking at Brat Camp... it seems to work...)actually, they are not going to train the dogs, they wil train you to look like a respectable leader to follow

Frenchgirl · 20/03/2004 10:32

that sounds like a tall order for them, me, a respectable leader to follow?????
