prettybird - that's what I thought, thanks for clearing that one up.

NomDePlume · 14/08/2006 15:41

Norah meant if there is a back seat when she said if there is one, I think.

Norah · 14/08/2006 15:42

I give up ! Thanks NdP !

prettybird · 14/08/2006 15:43

Actually it's 135cm, not 125cm. Sorry for the typo!

Reminds me - I must remind my parents that they'll need to get a booster for ds if they ever want to be able to help out by looking after ds occasionally.

beech · 14/08/2006 15:43

Ahhh - get you now - sorry for the mis-understanding.

beech · 14/08/2006 15:45

I didn't know that - about not having to use a booster in the back- which would be safer then - 8 yr old in back without booster or in front with? I think I will feel guilty either way...

citreon picasso is a small MPV. i am looking at the option of a small car thats cheap to run like my matiz was. the tino is a small MPV, it has five adult seats, i fit 3 car seats along the back, plus ample room for peter and his equipment. I was just unsure of whether to get a small car again, or consider a nissan NOTE if dd2 does get mobility. (i do like my nissans lol). the small car wouldnt get as much as the larger car and would be used more for just me and dd3+2 when dd1 is at school. so the 3rd child would only be in it for short journeys. the rest of the time we qwould need the big tank lol.

madmarchhare · 14/08/2006 15:56

new regulations here

Norah · 14/08/2006 15:58

Thanks for that link - was beginning to think I had got it wrong - but fortunately I was right in what I said !

prettybird · 14/08/2006 15:58

Beech - see Point 11 of madmarchhare's link.

beech · 14/08/2006 16:02

Does everyone agree with point 11 - that it would be safer to put a child in a booster in the front of the car, rather than in the back without one? I always thought the back of the car was the safest place?

We have put a baby seat in the front seat of a two-seater car that didn't have an airbag (that way at least you don't need to worry about whether it's been disabled). That's not really an issue any more since a flash flood wrote off the two-seater.

In general no, wouldn't put one in the front seat of a car otherwise (although I can imagine there might be circumstances where I'd do it as a one-off, just can't imagine what they might be). If I needed a car to fit three child seats in I'd get one that could fit them all in the back.

On a side issue, we used one of those mirror arrangements so that rear-facing DS in the back could be seen in the rearview mirror if driver moved head slightly.

beech · 14/08/2006 16:14

The thing is I cannot afford to change my car.

NAB3 · 14/08/2006 16:16

There are mirrors available for people wo prefer to have their rear facing child in the back and still to be able to see them.

I personally think all children should be in the back.

prettybird · 14/08/2006 16:17

What dies your car manual say? How close is your ds to being 135cm tall?

Personally, I'd be happier with him in abooster seat in the front, with the seat pushed back. That was the seat belt is "sitting" conrrectly. it's laso what the Department of transport recommends.

But whenever you're not travelling with both other kids, I'd make yor ds travel in the back.

lemonaid · 14/08/2006 16:20

Yes, I agree with point 11. If it is a choice between having 2 children in car seats and 1 child in just a seatbelt in the back and having 2 children in car seats in the back and 1 child in a car seat in the front (depending on manufacturer's instructions about airbags), then it does sound that it would be safer to have the 2-in-the-back, 1-in-the-front option.

I would do everything in my power to avoid that situation, but if the choice had to be made then that's the way I'd make it.

bobblehead · 14/08/2006 18:40

I used one of those mirrors NAB3. It was great and gave dd something to look at while she was rear facing too.
Personally wouldn't put dd in front seat, but a baby here recently died when her mums car was rear ended by a lorry, and she was strpped safely in the back. Was another baby next to her who was ok, so I suppose if its going to happen it will...
