Decorating a room for a brother and sister to share.

dd and ds are going to share a room for a couple of years when the new baby comes. They are going to have bunk beds but am unsure how to decorate so that I don't offend either of their sensibilities. The room is currently a soft blue (bit lilacy) so might do for both. Was thinking maybe yellow would be better with red gingham curtains?? Or maybe green (although most of downstairs is green).
Any ideas? I don't do characters though.

our 2 kids bedrooms are very neutral [glad I thought og that when we did back bedroom last year. The big room is like a mustard yellow and the small room is a apple green..both wallpapers bought from b+q that are really durable and can be wiped down etc. DD and db will share back room and ds is in front room...we just got rd of the winnie the pooh stuff that made it a nursery. Give them an area each to put their own mark on the room so a poster of their fave things etc.

how about 2 walls something like blossom white and 2 walls cornflower white...? You know the whites with a hint of colour. With curtains with spots on, incorporating both colours

We had rainbow wallpaper on 2 walls and the other 2 yellow (later white), with balloon curtains - all primary colours - which did for all 4 of mine.

my boys share but its different as they are both boys
would leave walls how they are and let them put posters up of their fav things
my boys have star wars and motorbikes up at mo

Or - I don't know how old they are - you could maybe use neutral characters like Spongebob. Or paint the walls all white and have different character stickers on a wall each.

dd is a girlie girl (she's 3) whilst ds isn't that boyish - he's not really into football but he still doesn't want a girlie room. Especially as he's the one who will be moving into dd's room, he needs to see some kind of change to make it feel like his too.
I like the sound of apple green with pale yellow.

I would have cream walls and cream curtains. then brightly coloured duvets. then I would give them each a huge pinboard type thing - or just a wall each, or bit of a wall, for their own pics - or whatever else they feel inclined to display.

love the pinboard idea - will definitely do that.

dd(2) and ds (6) currently share as my elder 2 are a boy and girl, both teens so couldnt expect to share with a younger child.
ive got cream walls, with one wall half painted in blackboard paint, ds and dd love chalking on there.
dds side of the room has pink stickarounds on the wall, pink bedding, dream catcher and her own coat peg.
ds has finding nemo border on his side with all his bedding(various diff tyopes) and a football peg for him.
the curtains are brightly coloured with animals on them, but not too babyish

SpaceCadet · 12/08/2006 17:22

durr ds is 5 not 6!

cupcakes · 12/08/2006 17:46

blackboard paint sounds like a fantastic idea.

its really cheap too, cost me 6 pounds for a small tub for b&q and it was just the right amount, bought 2 tubs for further touch ups.
