I want to make and sell cards to make a little bit of cash and do something a bit creative. Anyone any experience of this? Any tips?

I make cards and visit Craft Fairs and have found this site useful, although it will need refreshing as I haven't used it for a while.
I find Hobbycraft very expensive. For the card stock I use The Paper Mill Shop. Box of A4 card is £5.99 & you get about 100 sheets, you choose the colours.
For embelleishments I use a brilliant company called Stick'n'Mix.
I also do iris folding, which the shops are keen to buy, but they take a long time to do.

Mummy surfer,what is iris folding?

Mummysurfer · 14/03/2004 17:55

iris folding is a paper craft where you fold thin strips of paper which over lap and form a picture - here's an example - but it's not brilliant, just gives you the idea

I too make cards and now have a cupboard full as am not brave enough to sell them but spurred on by everybody on here am now going to try to book a stall at the next craft fair. DH reckons they are great (and I do too). Agree about the little bags, they stop them going grey when everybody is fingering them having a look as well. At the moment am struggling to buy precut card the right side (NZ so suppiers are limited) so bought a guilatine (? spelling) and cut large card to size with that and also use it for DS's art work.
Good luck, it is fun but obsessive though.

ebay is a great place to buy card-making suppliers and you can get some stuff really cheap!

Thanks for the link Mummysurfer.I'm looking for ideas too.

My mum makes cards, she buys stuff from catalogues she orders. She does big orders for friends, but its hard to find original ideas.

I have no problem with ideas. They just seem to appear! I went into two shops today, both in a village very near where I live. One said that she was opening a new shop in another close village in April, and that she wuld want 100 cards. The other has ordered 25 for Friday I'm so excited! I have also booked a craft stall in November for two days, so I will be able to sell Xmas cards.

I've made cards for friends and family for years and have just put a few on a trial sale at work to see how they go. I used to do glass painting aswell and I'm going to start that up again, if my paints and outliners haven't gunged up by now.
Planning on doing table top and car boot sales when I've got enough stock together, and definitely agree about the plastic envelopes - they look so much more professional.
There's always cards for sale on wahmall.co.uk, but I don't know how many actually sell. The talk pages of the docrafts website is also useful although it looks and feels very basic.

linzoid · 16/03/2004 19:07

where do you get plastic bags/envelopes from?

Chinchilla · 17/03/2004 22:19

All craft shops sell them for between £1 and £2 for a pack of 25.
