tried handle last night to check locked and it all slipped so handle went almost all round!
it IS locked but as it main access ..fires etc, need it sorting asap.
have seen all dodgy con men on t/v shows..what will it cost/will ineed new door/mechanism
will installers(think i under guarantee, have to check on solicitors deeds) rectify it?
arggghh could do without this expense

Is it double glazed door?

EvesMama · 07/08/2006 08:30

Well we took the lock apart from one of those and replaced it - I'm not very competant so it must have been quite easy

Katymac · 07/08/2006 08:31

Can you unscrew the handle from either side?

EvesMama · 07/08/2006 08:33

and cant actually 'open' it, it wont unlock?

i might ring somewhere like b&q and ask one of their advisers on department about materials costs etc, they may be able to help?

We have one of these horrid things on our front door (and back door). I fecking hate it. They are SO stiff, pulling the handle up is either impossible or takes a hell of a lot of welly and knackers your hand. Currently trying to get a joiner bloke to replace the whole shebang (ugly, crap door too).

EvesMama · 07/08/2006 13:17

i know!..you actually needed to use both hands to shut/open and lock cos it seemed it was far enough up but them it wouldnt lock so you had to wrench it up further?..maybe it was on its way out?, but last houses were similar but never crumbled like this!

do you live anywhere near one of these?
dial a hubby

if not you could pretend and ask for a likley quote on the mechanism.

EvesMama · 07/08/2006 15:17

wowthose are fab!

thankfully although my window guarantee does not cover mechanisms after one year(now theres a surprise!), the comapny came and did it in an hour and only charged £95..the guy even checked out back door incase that was on way out too(it isnt pheww) but had dropped and latch was worn so he also sorted that out too!!
although didnt want to be spending another £95 on unexpected jobs, at least i have peace of mind now!
