My ds is 2.6, and sits on a trike very easily. he can even push the peddles. So, how old did you buy you child their first bike?
We think hes a bit to young for one now, but is he?

Thanks

4, i think he may be a bit young, but you could take him to a bike shop and try - the best way to find out!

Gobbledigook · 06/08/2006 11:08

Ds1 got one when a friend 'donated' it and he was just coming up to 4 (before that he had a trike but could never pedal it - he took to the 'proper' bike quite easily).

Because they were on offer in Tesco, we got one for ds2 at the same time - he was about 2.5 and he couldn't the hang of it.

We didn't really have the bikes out over the winter but when we got it out again this spring he could do it straight away - at this point he was 3.5ish.

So I guess I could say 2.6 is too young. OTOH, ds3 is only 23 months and he is always climbing up onto the bikes and loves them. I reckon he could pedal it but his legs aren't long enough! He will probaby be riding one as soon as he is tall enough!

I guess you could get a small bike and see how he goes - if he can't manage it he will probably master it next spring.

I should go to the local bike shop really.
The only reason we were thinking it is because he now calls it the "baby bike" so wont often go on there any more (btw, we have a dd of 10months!)

dd was 4 and could pedal a trike for about a year beforehand. ds was 5 and never pedalled a trike and struggles with a bike.

ds1 and ds2 were three when they got theirs for their birthdays, a familybtradiotion BUT being short arsed it took a year for them to ride it properly. DS3 is 3 now, he'll get one at Christmas- left it a bit longer as he's even shorter. In fact have three to get as the others need next size up. makes for easy shopping tho LOL!

ds just go this for his second birthday - no pedals but but can do more than a trike and looks like the real 'big boys' bikes he is obsessed with

my first ever attempt at a link

We bought dd2 a bike for her 2nd birthday (will be 3yo in a couple of weeks), as she was already pedalling the trikes at nursery.

We got dd2's from here

This one is similar to hers and was £20 + delivery.

We go to Halfords, Toys r us etc to try the bikes for size, then order online from Sterling House.

fennel · 06/08/2006 13:06

my dd1 and dd2 were about 2.3. little bikes, 12" wheels with stabilisers. They found them easier to ride than a trike.

dd3 is that age and can't trike or bike though.

melpomene · 06/08/2006 13:21

DD1 recently got her first bike, at 3.2. She had never been able to pedal a trike, but got the hang of pedalling the bike after a few sessions and can steer pretty well now.

Does your ds have any slightly older friends with bikes? Maybe he could have a go on a friend's bike to see how he gets on.

puff · 06/08/2006 13:26

4th birthday for ds1 last year - have just taken the stabilisers off and he's riding happily without, with a few crashes here and there.

Ds2 - bought him a proper bike when he turned 3 last month, still has stabilisers.

zubb · 06/08/2006 13:30

ds1 got one for his third birthday, but had alerady been riding his trike for a while. Ds2 is 2.9 and rides his trike well - to the shops etc and will get a bike for his third birthday.

FrannyandZooey · 06/08/2006 13:32

We got him one for his 3rd birthday but he has only just grown enough to reach the ground and pedal easily. He's 3.4 and it's a 14" bike.

Uwila · 06/08/2006 14:13

3rd birthday. She likes it, but get frustrated easily. The problem is really more that no one has found/made the time to teach her to ride it.

Scoobydooooo · 06/08/2006 14:17

We brought our ds his first bike when he was 2 1/2 we brought it from toys'r us because we new he would grow out of it quite fast, he had stabillisers on it, at first he could not do it but aftewr about 6 months he really got the hang of it, he is now nearly 4 & i think he could do with a new one now but he is like a whizz on his bike now & he loves it

jofeb04 · 06/08/2006 14:32

Thanks for all the advice.
Our only concern is that he is quite short, so now sure on size.
DH is getting really excited about buying our ds one, boys and their toys lol

Jo, I was talked into getting the 14" one for ds by the bike shop and I wished I hadn't as he couldn't ride it at all out of doors. Buy one where your ds can touch the ground and that is not too unwieldy for him. Ds can ride his now, but that was 4 months of bitter disappointment for him and I think it could have put him off trying again. If you want to hold out for a bigger bike that will last him longer, wait a few months or even a year until he will physically be able to ride it, before buying it. I wish we had done this ourselves.

Scoobydooooo · 06/08/2006 16:54

Best thing to do is take him into a shop & try him on them for size, this is what we did with ds

NomDePlume · 06/08/2006 16:56

DD is getting her first proper bike for her 4th birthday, on Tuesday.

LunarSea · 06/08/2006 18:17

ds had his for his 2nd birthday, after he' got on the bike (with stabilisers obvioulsy) belonging to a neighbour's child when he was only 20 months and just pedalled away down the street on it.
